The Government of the Community of Madrid, and in particular, its General Directorate of Research and Universities, has founded one of the most technologically advanced research networks in Europe: REDIMadrid (Red Telemática de Investigación de Madrid). For this purpose, La Fundación Madri+d para el Conocimiento has been appointed as the institution in charge of the deployment, management and development of the network.
REDIMadrid was launched in 2003 with the goal of setting up an advanced communications infrastructure to enable high-speed data exchange between the research institutions of the Community of Madrid, and to provide transit to other national and international research networks over RedIRIS. Nowadays REDIMadrid is fully operational, offering a service targeted at obtaining maximum functionality, scalability, availability and performance from this network infrastructure.
The data network opens unprecedented communication possibilities to Madrid researchers in all areas, ranging from scientific multimedia, data base access, to a bulk of information transfer in distributed computing and virtual laboratory applications. Along with network research, REDIMadrid fosters active collaboration among institutions, research projects and thematic networks, enabling direct real-time interaction and close cooperation with other researchers at international scale.
Some of the applications whose usage by the institutions affiliated to REDIMadrid is currently growing are the following:
- E-teaching, e-learning and e-training
- Multimedia data base access (Digital Libraries)
- Videoconference, IP telephony, e-meetings, distributed seminars and workshops
- Advanced Collaboration Environments, Distributed Computing (GRID)
- TV and Radio broadcast
- Video streaming and VoD
- Tele-medicine (remote assistance, diagnostic and monitoring), bio-engineering
- Networked super-computing
- Virtual Laboratories, Real-time remote control
- Cooperative Immersion Systems (VR)
- Complex systems distributed simulation
- Satellite Image Processing (meteorology, environmental control)
- Sensor and actuator networks, robotics
- Genetics, molecules synthesis, pharmaceutical technology
- Remote project demonstrations
- Other research and academic applications
