Transmission Technologies

Due to its flexibility, performance and scalability the basic transmission technology employed in REDIMadrid is DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing). Over this transmission medium, most accesses use Gigabit-Ethernet in order to take advantage of features such as VLAN. On top, the IP protocol provides global addressing and routing in the Internet. A high link availability is guaranteed by a ring topology with optical redundancy, which means that full connectivity is preserved upon a fault in a section thanks to the other side of the ring. The physical topology is shown in the next figure:

Nodes

The entities currently connected to the research network of the Madrid Community are the following:

Universidad de Alcalá
Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
Universidad Carlos III de Madrid
Universidad Complutense de Madrid
Universidad Politécnica de Madrid
Universidad Rey Juan Carlos
Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED)
Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC)
Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA)

These institutions have a Gigabit Ethernet access to the central node which is connected to RedIRIS through a 2.5Gbit/s POS link. The following picture shows the logical network topology.

Point of Presence

At present, REDIMadrid has a point of presence at the premises of CTI-CSIC (Centro Técnico Informático del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas). The infrastructure of the central node includes high-speed high-availability routers and switches. The reliability of the equipment is based on the replication of critical elements, including redundancy of physical connections, processors, power supplies and UPS, supported by a 24x7 maintenance services, fire-fighting equipment, etc

Access to RedIRIS

The access to RedIRIS consists of a 2.5Gb/s POS link between the central REDIMadrid node located at the Centro Técnico Informático of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, and the RedIRIS PoP at Madrid. This link has a permanent backup line. The current equipment permits a wide range access speed upgrade in order to cope with medium-term traffic increases.
