Bringing knowledge to society

Following the Berlin Declaration of 2003 for the promotion of free access to scientific knowledge and cultural heritage, the Autonomous Community of Madrid and the Consortium Madroño (the Academic Public Libraries of Madrid and the National Distance Education University of Spain Library -UNED-), have created a joint network of repositories to make results of scientific research available to the public through open access. This joint programme will give the region of Madrid a prominent position in the innovation of scientific information provisioning.

The portal "e-ciencia" offers to researchers and all interested people direct access to a rich collection of scientific outputs from Madrid universities and research institutions. Currently "e-ciencia" consists of 15.935 digital objects. This is a broad collection which guarantees digital accessibility to the full text without any restrictions. The availability of different access options allows searching target group specific information.

The project will develop added value services like full text search, citation tools, statistics and collaborative work environments to support the information and communication workflow of digital research.

The portal also aims to be the information platform to meet the rising demand for information on open access. Apart from basic information, assistance is offered ranging from practical self-archiving to basic legal conditions.
