The 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (2002-2006)

The 6th Framework Programme finished on 31th December 2006 and has been replaced by the 7th Framework Programme, which covers the period 2007 to 2013.

The main objective of the 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP6) is to establish a financial instrument making it possible to create a true European Research Area (ERA). By improving greater cooperation between the various economic, social and scientific players, the ERA promotes scientific excellence, competitiveness and innovation.

The FP6 comprises the following specific programmes:

 Integrating and reinforcing the European Research Area (thematic priorities). Budget: EUR 13.345 billion.
 Strengthening the foundations of the European Research Area. Budget: EUR 320 million.
 Structuring the European Research Area. Budget: EUR 2 605 billion.
 The activities of the Joint Research Centre (JRC).
 Nuclear energy.
 The activities of the Joint Research Centre (Euratom).

The total budget for the FP6 is EUR 17.5 billion, EUR 16.270 billion of which is for the European Community (EC) part and EUR 1.230 million for the Euratom part. The FP6 covers a period of four years, from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2006.
