El glaciar del Baltoro, las cumbres del K2 y el Everest desde el espacio

David ByNEn el Norte de Pakistan confluyen tres de las más importantes cordilleras de nuestro planeta: el Hindu Kush, el Himalaya y el glaciar del Baltoro, de unos 60 kilómetros de longitud y uno de los más prolongados fuera de Groenlandia y la Antártida.

El glaciar es fácilmente distinguible desde el espacio a distancias próximas, como nos muestra la imagen tomada desde el transbordador espacial. Es, verdaderamente, un río de hielo que transporta, lentamente, ingentes cantidades de agua y roca, La fotografía también revela muy claramente la presencia de grandes picos, entre los que sobresale el K2, por su extraordinaria altura (el segundo más alto de nuestro planeta, de una simetría piramidal casi perfecta) y el Masherbrum, por su gran masa rocosa, resaltada por la orientación y el juego de las sombras.

El monte Everest, la montaña más alta de nuestro planeta (aunque mucho más pequeño en valores absolutos y relativos que el doblemente mítico Mons Olympus en Marte), se nos revela también impresionante a vista de pájaro. ¡Qué no debió sentir Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, cuando, con su escuadrilla de aviones, sobrevoló por primera vez esta impresionante cumbre! De hecho, el perfil piramidal del Everest, de base triangular, resalta con facilidad y domina las inmediaciones.

Desde el espacio, tal vez el Everest pierda parte de su majestuosidad, perdido en medio de un paraje casi alienígena, en donde las nubes, la nieve y los glaciares conspiran casi para ocultar el techo del mundo. Aún así, mito en una región poblada de ellos, sigue siendo el ansiado trofeo de numerosos montañeros y senderistas, y continua dominando la imaginación y los sueños del resto de los mortales.
