Año Internacional de Los Suelo 2015 y Día Mundial del Suelo, aprobados por la Asamblea General de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (International Year of Soils 2015 and World Soil Day 5 December)

ano-y-dias-mundiales-del-suelo

Estimado Juanjo,
Te envío estas buenas noticias. Feliz Navidad!
Ronald

Subject: INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF SOILS 2015 AND WORLD SOIL DAY 5 DECEMBER

Dear soil partners and friends,

Today is a memorable day for the global soil science community as the 68th United Nations General Assembly has designated 5th of December as World Soil Day and declared 2015 as the International Year of Soils (resolution enclosed)!

It took two years of hard work from all the partners under the leadership of Thailand and the FAO Global Soil Partnership in order to inform members that soil is a crucial resource that requires urgent attention if to address the various challenges ahead.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all the partners who have been very active and supportive in this process. We have a huge responsibility in front of us, as this will be a unique opportunity for soil scientists to position soils in the development agenda beyond 2015.

The GSP Secretariat will serve as the Secretariat of the International Year of Soils and thus, will immediately establish an organizing committee composed by willing partners in order to prepare a joint plan of activities for the year. Our goal is to make IYS 2015 as a memorable year demonstrating that the soils community could really contribute to the efforts for food security, hunger eradication, climate change adaptation, poverty reduction and sustainable development.

Finally, we would like to wish you a Healthy and Prosperous 2014!

Our best wishes,
GSP Secretariat

World Soil Day and International Year of Soils

The General Assembly,

Reaffirming General Assembly resolutions 53/199 of 15 December 1998 and 61/185 of 20 December 2006 on the proclamation of international years, and Economic and Social Council resolution 1980/67 of 25 July 1980 on international years and anniversaries, particularly paragraphs 1 to 10 of its annex on the agreed criteria for their proclamation, as well as paragraphs 13 and 14 stating that an international day or year should not be proclaimed before the basic arrangements for its organization and financing have been made, Noting that soils constitute the foundation for agricultural development, essential ecosystem functions and food security and hence are key to sustaining life on Earth, Recognizing that the sustainability of soils is key to addressing the pressures of a growing population and that recognition, advocacy and support for promoting sustainable management of soils can contribute to healthy soils and thus to a food secure world and to stable and sustainably used ecosystems,
