T\u00edpicamente su radio es del orden de una cent\u00e9sima parte del radio solar, su temperatura unos 10 000 K (por lo que se ven de color blanco) y su masa la mitad del Sol. No obstante, al ser tan peque\u00f1as, su brillo total es tambi\u00e9n escaso, y son dif\u00edciles de observar. Las enanas blancas representan la fase \u00faltima de la vida de las estrellas similares al Sol. Alg\u00fan d\u00eda, al agotar toda su energ\u00eda nuclear, el Sol comenzar\u00e1 a colapsarse y brillar\u00e1 s\u00f3lo por la energ\u00eda que genere al contraerse (a diferencia de su estado actual, en que brilla por la energ\u00eda nuclear liberada en su centro). Conforme se contraiga, su brillo ir\u00e1 decreciendo. El destino de una enana blanca, pues, es ir enfri\u00e1ndose y apag\u00e1ndose lentamente, mientras su densidad aumenta. Su densidad llega a ser enorme: un pedazo de materia del centro de una enana blanca del tama\u00f1o de un terr\u00f3n de az\u00facar pesar\u00eda f\u00e1cilmente cien toneladas en la superficie terrestre. A tales densidades se producen efectos f\u00edsicos muy complejos que no podemos reproducir en nuestros laboratorios, lo que convierte a las enanas blancas en objetos de estudio muy interesantes. La \u00fanica forma que tiene una enana blanca de escapar a su destino consiste en incorporar materia nueva por acreci\u00f3n (procedente, por ejemplo, de una estrella compa\u00f1era). Si ello ocurre, la enana blanca puede llegar a sufrir una explosi\u00f3n de supernova que la destruir\u00e1 por completo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-131738\" title=\"Nebulosa planetario (enana blanca)\" src=\"https:\/\/www.madrimasd.org\/blogs\/astrofisica\/files\/2010\/02\/enana_blanca.lr.jpg\" alt=\"Nebulosa planetario (enana blanca)\" width=\"188\" height=\"205\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Nebulosa planetaria M27 o nebulosa Haltera.
