En la esquina inferior derecha se ha superpuesto una imagen de la Tierra en la misma escala, para poder comparar sus tama\u00f1os. Cr\u00e9ditos: Universidad de Utrecht (Holanda).<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nUna mancha solar t\u00edpica presenta una zona interior m\u00e1s oscura, llamada umbra, rodeada de una zona de brillo intermedio y aspecto filamentoso, la penumbra. Las manchas se ven oscuras por su menor temperatura, unos 3700 K en la umbra, frente a los 5700 K de las zonas circundantes. La intensa concentraci\u00f3n de campo magn\u00e9tico, que en las manchas puede ser miles de veces mayor que el campo magn\u00e9tico terrestre, inhibe los movimientos convectivos que calientan la fotosfera desde abajo, lo que causa el enfriamiento relativo que hace las manchas m\u00e1s oscuras.
