Este hecho observacional se denomina expansi\u00f3n del universo y fue descubierto por Edwin Powell Hubble y Milton Lasell Humason en 1929. Si se toman dos c\u00famulos de galaxias cualesquiera, la distancia entre ellos crece sin cesar, y lo hace no porque las galaxias o los c\u00famulos se desplacen, sino porque crece el espacio que media entre ellos. Es m\u00e1s, cuanto m\u00e1s distantes entre s\u00ed se encuentren los c\u00famulos considerados, m\u00e1s veloz es el incremento de la distancia. La intensidad de la expansi\u00f3n del universo en cualquier instante de su historia se valora por medio del par\u00e1metro de Hubble, H. El valor actual del par\u00e1metro de Hubble recibe el nombre de constante de Hubble y se simboliza como H0. La expansi\u00f3n del universo no afecta a sistemas ligados gravitatoriamente, es decir, el proceso no altera las distancias entre los \u00e1tomos de nuestros cuerpos, entre la Tierra y el Sol o incluso entre las estrellas de la Galaxia o entre galaxias pertenecientes a un mismo c\u00famulo.
