Este sector est\u00e1 constituido por materia oscura (una forma de materia no luminosa) y energ\u00eda oscura, cuyo origen y composici\u00f3n son desconocidos. La materia oscura constituye alrededor del 23% del universo y est\u00e1 formada por part\u00edculas ex\u00f3ticas no bari\u00f3nicas, que interaccionan muy d\u00e9bilmente con la materia bari\u00f3nica ordinaria.<br \/>\nLa existencia de la materia oscura se infiere, entre otros indicios, de la curva de rotaci\u00f3n de las galaxias. Esta curva es una representaci\u00f3n gr\u00e1fica de la velocidad orbital de las estrellas o el gas de una galaxia en funci\u00f3n de la distancia al centro de la misma. Las observaciones muestran que las estrellas giran alrededor del centro de las galaxias a una velocidad constante, independiente de la distancia al centro, hasta una distancia muy grande, mucho mayor que la predicha por la mec\u00e1nica newtoniana para la masa visible de la galaxia en cuesti\u00f3n.
