Grouse, if not destroyed at some period of their lives, would increase in countless numbers; they are known to suffer largely from birds of prey; and hawks are guided by eyesight to their prey,\u2014so much so that on parts of the continent persons are warned not to keep white pigeons, as being the most liable to destruction. Hence natural selection might be effective in giving the proper colour to each kind of grouse, and in keeping that colour, when once acquired, true and constant. Nor ought we to think that the occasional destruction of an animal of any particular colour would produce little effect; we should remember how essential it is in a flock of white sheep to destroy a lamb with the faintest trace of black. We have seen how the colour of hogs, which feed on the \u00abpaint-root\u00bb in Virginia, determines whether they shall live or die. In plants, the down on the fruit and the colour of the flesh are considered by botanists as characters of the most trifling importance; yet we hear from an excellent horticulturist, Downing, that in the United States smooth-skinned fruits suffer far more from a beetle, a Curculio, than those with down; that purple plums suffer far more from a certain disease than yellow plums; whereas another disease attacks yellow-fleshed peaches far more than those with other coloured flesh. If, with all the aids of art, these slight differences make a great difference in cultivating the several varieties, assuredly, in a state of nature, where the trees would have to struggle with other trees and with a host of enemies, such differences would effectually settle which variety, whether a smooth or downy, a yellow or a purple-fleshed fruit, should succeed.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n

Cuando vemos verdes los insectos que comen hojas, y moteados de gris los que se alimentan de cortezas, blanco en invierno el Lagopus mutus o perdiz alpina, y del color de los brezos el Lagopus scoticus o perdiz de Escocia, hemos de creer que estos colores son de utilidad a estos insectos y aves para librarse de peligros. Los Lagopus, si no fuesen destruidos en alg\u00fan per\u00edodo de su vida, aumentar\u00edan hasta ser innumerables; pero se sabe que sufren mucho por las aves de rapi\u00f1a, y los halcones se dirigen a sus presas por el sentido de la vista, tanto, que en algunos sitios del continente se aconseja no conservar palomas blancas, por ser las m\u00e1s expuestas a destrucci\u00f3n. Por consiguiente, la selecci\u00f3n natural pudo ser eficaz para dar el color conveniente a cada especie de Lagopus y en conservar este color justo y constante una vez adquirido. No debemos creer que la destrucci\u00f3n accidental de un animal de un color particular haya de producir peque\u00f1o efecto; hemos de recordar lo importante que es en un reba\u00f1o de ovejas blancas destruir todo cordero con la menor se\u00f1al de negro. Hemos visto c\u00f3mo el color de los cerdos que se alimentan de paint-root (Lachnanthes tinctoria) en Virginia determina el que hayan de morir o vivir. En las plantas, la vellosidad del fruto y el color de la carne son considerados por los bot\u00e1nicos como caracteres de importancia la m\u00e1s insignificante; sin embargo, sabemos por un excelente horticultor, Downing, que en los Estados Unidos las frutas de piel lisa son mucho m\u00e1s atacadas por un cole\u00f3ptero, un Curculio, que las que tienen vello, y que las ciruelas moradas padecen mucho m\u00e1s cierta enfermedad que las ciruelas amarillas, mientras que otra enfermedad ataca a los melocotones de carne amarilla mucho m\u00e1s que a los que tienen la carne de otro color.
