The insects in Madeira which are not ground-feeders, and which, as certain flower-feeding coleoptera and lepidoptera, must habitually use their wings to gain their subsistence, have, as Mr. Wollaston suspects, their wings not at all reduced, but even enlarged. This is quite compatible with the action of natural selection. For when a new insect first arrived on the island, the tendency of natural selection to enlarge or to reduce the wings, would depend on whether a greater number of individuals were saved by successfully battling with the winds, or by giving up the attempt and rarely or never flying. As with mariners shipwrecked near a coast, it would have been better for the good swimmers if they had been able to swim still further, whereas it would have been better for the bad swimmers if they had not been able to swim at all and had stuck to the wreck.<\/em><\/p>\n

Los insectos de la isla de la Madera que no encuentran su alimento en el suelo y que, como ciertos cole\u00f3pteros y lepid\u00f3pteros que se alimentan de las flores, tienen que usar habitualmente sus alas para conseguir su sustento, seg\u00fan sospecha m\u00edster Wollaston, no tienen sus alas en modo alguno reducidas, sino incluso m\u00e1s desarrolladas. Es lo que ocurre con los marineros que naufragan cerca de una casta: habr\u00eda sido mejor para los buenos nadadores el haber podido nadar todav\u00eda m\u00e1s, mientras que habr\u00eda sido mejor para los malos nadadores el que no hubiesen sabido nadar en absoluto y se hubiesen agarrado tenazmente a los restos del naufragio.<\/em><\/p>\n

Al parecer, el viento arrastra a los escarabajos hacia el mar y en respuesta los que no pueden volar, sobreviven. Pero tambi\u00e9n sobreviven los que vuelan lo suficientemente bien como para compensar la acci\u00f3n del viento. Todo ello son especulaciones sin prueba alguna.
