La selecci\u00f3n natural explicar\u00e1 ni m\u00e1s ni menos que lo que sus creyentes quieran y dejar\u00e1 de explicar todo aquello que los creyentes no quieran. Hay algo inquietante en esta arbitrariedad que consiste en dar tanta importancia a una construcci\u00f3n artificial, a un fantasma sem\u00e1ntico,\u2026.. Esto permite al autor explicar la transformaci\u00f3n de las especies por exactamente los mismos mecanismos que dan lugar a las variedades. But there is no necessity for supposing that all the parts of any being have been simultaneously modified. The most striking modifications, excellently adapted for some purpose, might, as was formerly remarked, be acquired by successive variations, if slight, first in one part and then in another; and as they would be transmitted all together, they would appear to us as if they had been simultaneously developed. The best answer, however, to the above objection is afforded by those domestic races which have been modified, chiefly through man’s power of selection, for some special purpose. Look at the race and dray-horse, or at the greyhound and mastiff. Their whole frames, and even their mental characteristics, have been modified; but if we could trace each step in the history of their transformation\u2014and the latter steps can be traced\u2014we should not see great and simultaneous changes, but first one part and then another slightly modified and improved. Even when selection has been applied by man to some one character alone\u2014of which our cultivated plants offer the best instances\u2014it will invariably be found that although this one part, whether it be the flower, fruit, or leaves, has been greatly changed, almost all the other parts have been slightly modified. Toda su constituci\u00f3n y hasta sus caracter\u00edsticas mentales se han modificado; pero, si pudi\u00e9semos seguir todos los pasos de la historia de su transformaci\u00f3n -y los \u00faltimos pasos pueden ser seguidos-, no ver\u00edamos cambios grandes y simult\u00e1neos, sino primero una parte y luego otra, ligeramente modificadas y perfeccionadas. Aun cuando la selecci\u00f3n ha sido aplicada por el hombre a un car\u00e1cter s\u00f3lo -de lo que nuestras plantas cultivadas ofrecen los mejores ejemplos- se encontrar\u00e1 invariablemente que, si bien esta parte, ya sea la flor, el fruto o las hojas, ha cambiado grandemente, casi todas las otras se han modificado un poco.
