377<\/em><\/p>\n It is not easy to imagine two objects more widely different in appearance than a bristle or vibraculum, and an avicularium like the head of a bird; yet they are almost certainly homologous and have been developed from the same common source, namely a zooid with its cell. Hence, we can understand how it is that these organs graduate in some cases, as I am informed by Mr. Busk, into each other. Thus, with the avicularia of several species of Lepralia, the movable mandible is so much produced and is so like a bristle that the presence of the upper or fixed beak alone serves to determine its avicularian nature. The vibracula may have been directly developed from the lips of the cells, without having passed through the avicularian stage; but it seems more probable that they have passed through this stage, as during the early stages of the transformation, the other parts of the cell, with the included zooid, could hardly have disappeared at once. In many cases the vibracula have a grooved support at the base, which seems to represent the fixed beak; though this support in some species is quite absent. This view of the development of the vibracula, if trustworthy, is interesting; for supposing that all the species provided with avicularia had become extinct, no one with the most vivid imagination would ever have thought that the vibracula had originally existed as part of an organ, resembling a bird’s head, or an irregular box or hood. It is interesting to see two such widely different organs developed from a common origin; and as the movable lip of the cell serves as a protection to the zooid, there is no difficulty in believing that all the gradations, by which the lip became converted first into the lower mandible of an avicularium, and then into an elongated bristle, likewise served as a protection in different ways and under different circumstances.<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n No es f\u00e1cil imaginar dos objetos m\u00e1s diferentes, en apariencia, que una cerda o vibr\u00e1culo y un aviculario, parecido a la cabeza de un ave; y, sin embargo, son, casi con seguridad, hom\u00f3logos, y se han desarrollado a partir del mismo origen com\u00fan, o sea, el zooide con su celda. Los vibr\u00e1culos pueden haberse desarrollado directamente de los op\u00e9rculos de las celdas, sin haber pasado por el estado de avicularios; pero parece m\u00e1s probable que hayan pasado por \u00e9ste, pues durante los primeros estados de la transformaci\u00f3n, las otras partes de la celda, con el zooide que comprende, dif\u00edcilmente pudieron haber desaparecido de una vez. En muchos casos los vibr\u00e1culos tienen en su base un soporte con surcos, que parece representar el pico fijo, aun cuando este soporte, en algunas especies, falta por completo. Esta teor\u00eda del desarrollo de los vibr\u00e1culos, si merece cr\u00e9dito, es interesante, pues suponiendo que todas las especies provistas de avicularios se hubieran extinguido, nadie, ni aun con la m\u00e1s viva imaginaci\u00f3n, hubiese nunca pensado que los vibr\u00e1culos hab\u00edan existido primitivamente como parte de un \u00f3rgano parecido a un pico de un ave, o a una caja irregular o caperuza. Es interesante ver que estos dos \u00f3rganos tan diferentes se han desarrollado a partir de un origen com\u00fan, y como el op\u00e9rculo m\u00f3vil de las celdas sirve de protecci\u00f3n al zooide, no hay dificultad en creer que todas las gradaciones, mediante las cuales el op\u00e9rculo lleg\u00f3 a convertirse, primero en mand\u00edbula superior de un aviculario y luego en alargada cerda, sirvieron igualmente de protecci\u00f3n de diferentes modos y en circunstancias diferentes.<\/em><\/p>\n Lectura aconsejada:<\/p>\n
