Domestic instincts are sometimes spoken of as actions which have become inherited solely from long-continued and compulsory habit, but this is not true. No one would ever have thought of teaching, or probably could have taught, the tumbler-pigeon to tumble\u2014an action which, as I have witnessed, is performed by young birds, that have never seen a pigeon tumble. We may believe that some one pigeon showed a slight tendency to this strange habit, and that the long-continued selection of the best individuals in successive generations made tumblers what they now are; and near Glasgow there are house-tumblers, as I hear from Mr. Brent, which cannot fly eighteen inches high without going head over heels. It may be doubted whether any one would have thought of training a dog to point, had not some one dog naturally shown a tendency in this line; and this is known occasionally to happen, as I once saw, in a pure terrier: the act of pointing is probably, as many have thought, only the exaggerated pause of an animal preparing to spring on its prey. When the first tendency to point was once displayed, methodical selection and the inherited effects of compulsory training in each successive generation would soon complete the work; and unconscious selection is still in progress, as each man tries to procure, without intending to improve the breed, dogs which stand and hunt best. On the other hand, habit alone in some cases has sufficed; hardly any animal is more difficult to tame than the young of the wild rabbit; scarcely any animal is tamer than the young of the tame rabbit; but I can hardly suppose that domestic rabbits have often been selected for tameness alone; so that we must attribute at least the greater part of the inherited change from extreme wildness to extreme tameness, to habit and long-continued close confinement.<\/em><\/p>\n

Se ha hablado algunas veces de los instintos dom\u00e9sticos c\u00f3mo de actos que se han hecho hereditarios, debido solamente a la costumbre impuesta y continuada durante mucho tiempo; pero esto no es cierto. Nadie tuvo que haber ni siquiera pensado en ense\u00f1ar -ni probablemente pudo haber ense\u00f1ado- a dar volteretas a la paloma volteadora, acto que realizan, como yo he presenciado, los individuos j\u00f3venes, que nunca han visto dar volteretas a ninguna paloma. Podemos creer que alguna paloma mostr\u00f3 una ligera tendencia a esta extra\u00f1a costumbre, y que la selecci\u00f3n continuada durante mucho tiempo de los mejores individuos en las sucesivas generaciones hizo de las volteadoras lo que son hoy, y, seg\u00fan me dice m\u00edster Brent, cerca de Glasgow hay volteadoras caseras, que no pueden volar a una altura de diez y ocho pulgadas sin dar la vuelta. Cuando apareci\u00f3 la primera tendencia a mostrar la selecci\u00f3n met\u00f3dica y los efectos hereditarios del amaestramiento impuesto en cada generaci\u00f3n sucesiva, hubieron de completar pronto la obra, y la selecci\u00f3n inconsciente contin\u00faa todav\u00eda cuando cada cual -sin intentar mejorar la casta- se esfuerza en conseguir perros que muestren y cacen mejor. Por otra parte, la costumbre s\u00f3lo en algunos casos ha sido suficiente; casi ning\u00fan otro animal es m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil de amansar que el gazapo de un conejo de monte, y apenas hay animal m\u00e1s manso que el gazapo del conejo amansado; pero dif\u00edcilmente puedo suponer que los conejos dom\u00e9sticos hayan sido seleccionados frecuentemente, s\u00f3lo por mansos, de modo que tenemos que atribuir a la costumbre y al prolongado encierro la mayor parte, por lo menos, del cambio hereditario, desde el extremo salvajismo a la extrema mansedumbre.<\/em><\/p>\n
