Para restar importancia al concepto de especie ahora el autor viene a comparar los cruzamientos entre tipos distintos de especies di y trim\u00f3rficas con los cruzamientos entre especies distintas. Los experimentos quedan sin describir. Se nos cuenta que se han hecho, pero no se dice ni en qu\u00e9 plantas, ni en cu\u00e1ntas ocasiones ni se da detalle alguno. As the degree of sterility in the latter case depends in an eminent degree on the conditions of life being more or less favourable, so I have found it with illegitimate unions. It is well known that if pollen of a distinct species be placed on the stigma of a flower, and its own pollen be afterwards, even after a considerable interval of time, placed on the same stigma, its action is so strongly prepotent that it generally annihilates the effect of the foreign pollen; so it is with the pollen of the several forms of the same species, for legitimate pollen is strongly prepotent over illegitimate pollen, when both are placed on the same stigma. I ascertained this by fertilising several flowers, first illegitimately, and twenty-four hours afterwards legitimately, with pollen taken from a peculiarly coloured variety, and all the seedlings were similarly coloured; this shows that the legitimate pollen, though applied twenty-four hours subsequently, had wholly destroyed or prevented the action of the previously applied illegitimate pollen. Again, as in making reciprocal crosses between the same two species, there is occasionally a great difference in the result, so the same thing occurs with trimorphic plants; for instance, the mid-styled form of Lythrum salicaria was illegitimately fertilised with the greatest ease by pollen from the longer stamens of the short-styled form, and yielded many seeds; but the latter form did not yield a single seed when fertilised by the longer stamens of the mid-styled form.<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n La infecundidad que se puede observar en diferentes plantas dimorfas y trimorfas cuando son fecundas ileg\u00edtimamente -esto es, por polen tomado de estambres que no corresponden en altura al pistilo-, difiere mucho en grado hasta llegar a la esterilidad absoluta y completa, exactamente lo mismo que ocurre en los cruzamientos de especies distintas. Es bien conocido que si en el estigma de una flor se coloca el polen de una especie distinta y luego -aun despu\u00e9s de un espacio de tiempo considerable- se coloca en el mismo estigma su propio polen, la acci\u00f3n del segundo es tan vigorosamente preponderante, que, en general, anula el efecto del polen precedente; lo mismo ocurre con el polen de las diferentes formas de la misma especie, pues el polen leg\u00edtimo es en\u00e9rgicamente preponderante sobre el ileg\u00edtimo cuando se colocan ambos sobre el mismo estigma. Me he cerciorado de esto fecundando diferentes flores, primero ileg\u00edtimamente y veinticuatro horas despu\u00e9s leg\u00edtimamente, con polen tomado de una variedad de color particular, y todas las plantitas procedentes de las semillas eran de este mismo color; esto demuestra que el polen leg\u00edtimo, aunque aplicado veinticuatro horas despu\u00e9s, hab\u00eda destruido por completo, o evitado, la acci\u00f3n del polen ileg\u00edtimo anteriormente aplicado. Adem\u00e1s, en este caso -lo mismo que al hacer cruzamientos rec\u00edprocos entre dos especies- hay, a veces, una gran diferencia en los resultados, y lo mismo ocurre en las especies trimorfas; por ejemplo, la forma de estilo mediano de Lythrum salicaria fue fecundada ileg\u00edtimamente, con la mayor facilidad, por el polen de los estambres largos de la forma de estilo corto, y produjo muchas semillas; pero esta \u00faltima forma no produjo ni una sola semilla al ser fecundada por los estambres largos de la forma de estilo mediano.<\/em><\/p>\n Lectura aconsejada:<\/p>\n
