Esto me condujo a observar cuidadosamente, durante cuatro a\u00f1os, muchas plantas nacidas de semillas procedentes de varias uniones ileg\u00edtimas. El resultado principal es que estas plantas ileg\u00edtimas -como pueden llamarse- no son por completo fecundas.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 495<\/em><\/p>\n In all these respects, and in others which might be added, the forms of the same undoubted species, when illegitimately united, behave in exactly the same manner as do two distinct species when crossed. This led me carefully to observe during four years many seedlings, raised from several illegitimate unions. The chief result is that these illegitimate plants, as they may be called, are not fully fertile. It is possible to raise from dimorphic species, both long-styled and short-styled illegitimate plants, and from trimorphic plants all three illegitimate forms. These can then be properly united in a legitimate manner. When this is done, there is no apparent reason why they should not yield as many seeds as did their parents when legitimately fertilised. But such is not the case. They are all infertile, in various degrees; some being so utterly and incurably sterile that they did not yield during four seasons a single seed or even seed-capsule. The sterility of these illegitimate plants, when united with each other in a legitimate manner, may be strictly compared with that of hybrids when crossed inter se.<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Por todos estos conceptos, y por otros que podr\u00edan a\u00f1adirse, las formas de una misma especie indubitable, cuando se unen ileg\u00edtimamente, se conducen exactamente del mismo modo que dos especies distintas cuando se cruzan. Esto me condujo a observar cuidadosamente, durante cuatro a\u00f1os, muchas plantas nacidas de semillas procedentes de varias uniones ileg\u00edtimas. El resultado principal es que estas plantas ileg\u00edtimas -como pueden llamarse- no son por completo fecundas. Es posible obtener de las especies dimorfas plantas ilegitimas, tanto de estilo largo como de estilo corto, y de las plantas, trimorfas, las tres formas ileg\u00edtimas. Estas pueden despu\u00e9s unirse debidamente de un modo legitimo. Cuando se ha hecho esto, no parece que haya raz\u00f3n alguna para que no den tantas semillas como dieron sus padres cuando fueron fecundados leg\u00edtimamente. Pero no ocurre as\u00ed; todas ellas son infecundas en diferentes grados, siendo algunas tan completa e incorregiblemente est\u00e9riles, que no produjeron, en cuatro temporadas, ni una sola semilla, y ni siquiera un fruto. La esterilidad de estas plantas ileg\u00edtimas al unirse entre s\u00ed de un modo leg\u00edtimo puede compararse rigurosamente con la de los h\u00edbridos cuando se cruzan inter se.<\/em><\/p>\n \n Lectura aconsejada:<\/p>\n\n
