If such gradations were not all fully preserved, transitional varieties would merely appear as so many new, though closely allied species. It is also probable that each great period of subsidence would be interrupted by oscillations of level, and that slight climatical changes would intervene during such lengthy periods; and in these cases the inhabitants of the archipelago would migrate, and no closely consecutive record of their modifications could be preserved in any one formation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Puede dudarse de si la duraci\u00f3n de cualquiera de los grandes per\u00edodos de hundimiento de todo o de parte del Archipi\u00e9lago, acompa\u00f1ado de una acumulaci\u00f3n simult\u00e1nea de sedimento, ha de exceder del promedio de duraci\u00f3n de las mismas formas espec\u00edficas, y estas circunstancias son indispensables para la conservaci\u00f3n de todas las formas graduales de transici\u00f3n entre dos o m\u00e1s especies. Si estas gradaciones no se conservaron todas por completo, las variedades de transici\u00f3n aparecer\u00edan tan s\u00f3lo como otras tantas especies nuevas, aunque muy pr\u00f3ximas.
