With respect to plants, it has long been known what enormous ranges many fresh-water, and even marsh-species, have, both over continents and to the most remote oceanic islands. This is strikingly illustrated, according to Alph. de Candolle, in those large groups of terrestrial plants, which have very few aquatic members; for the latter seem immediately to acquire, as if in consequence, a wide range. I think favourable means of dispersal explain this fact. I have before mentioned that earth occasionally adheres in some quantity to the feet and beaks of birds. Wading birds, which frequent the muddy edges of ponds, if suddenly flushed, would be the most likely to have muddy feet. Birds of this order wander more than those of any other; and are occasionally found on the most remote and barren islands of the open ocean; they would not be likely to alight on the surface of the sea, so that any dirt on their feet would not be washed off; and when gaining the land, they would be sure to fly to their natural fresh-water haunts. I do not believe that botanists are aware how charged the mud of ponds is with seeds: I have tried several little experiments, but will here give only the most striking case: I took in February three tablespoonfuls of mud from three different points, beneath water, on the edge of a little pond; this mud when dry weighed only 6 and 3\/4 ounces; I kept it covered up in my study for six months, pulling up and counting each plant as it grew; the plants were of many kinds, and were altogether 537 in number; and yet the viscid mud was all contained in a breakfast cup! Considering these facts, I think it would be an inexplicable circumstance if water-birds did not transport the seeds of fresh-water plants to unstocked ponds and streams, situated at very distant points. The same agency may have come into play with the eggs of some of the smaller fresh-water animals.<\/em><\/p>\n

Por lo que se refiere a las plantas, se conoce desde hace mucho tiempo la enorme distribuci\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica que muchas especies de agua dulce, y aun especies palustres, tienen, tanto sobre los continentes, como por las islas oce\u00e1nicas m\u00e1s remotas. Un notable ejemplo de esto ofrecen, seg\u00fan Alph. de Candolle, los grandes grupos de plantas terrestres que tienen un corto n\u00famero de especies que son acu\u00e1ticas, pues estas \u00faltimas parecen adquirir, como consecuencia de ello, una vasta distribuci\u00f3n. Creo yo que este hecho se explica por los medios favorables de dispersi\u00f3n. He mencionado antes que a veces se adhiere cierta cantidad de tierra a las patas y picos de las aves. Las zancudas, que frecuentan las orillas fangosas de las lagunas, al echar a volar de pronto, facil\u00edsimamente han de tener las patas cargadas de barro. Las aves de este orden viajan m\u00e1s que las de ning\u00fan otro, y a veces se las encuentra en las islas m\u00e1s remotas y est\u00e9riles situadas en pleno oc\u00e9ano; no deben ser a prop\u00f3sito para posarse en la superficie del mar, de manera que nada del barro de sus patas ha de ser arrastrado por el agua y, al llegar a tierra, seguramente deben tener que volar hacia los parajes donde haya el agua dulce que naturalmente frecuentan. No creo que los bot\u00e1nicos est\u00e9n enterados de lo cargado de semillas que est\u00e1 el barro de las lagunas; he hecho varios peque\u00f1os experimentos, pero citar\u00e9 aqu\u00ed s\u00f3lo el caso m\u00e1s notable: tom\u00e9, en febrero, tres cucharadas grandes de barro en tres puntos diferentes de debajo del agua, junto a la orilla de una charca; este barro, despu\u00e9s de seco, pes\u00f3 tan s\u00f3lo seis onzas y tres cuartos; lo conserv\u00e9 tapado en mi cuarto de trabajo durante seis meses, arrancando y contando las plantas a medida que sal\u00edan; estas plantas eran de muchas clases, y fueron en n\u00famero de 537, y, sin embargo, todo el barro, h\u00famedo, cab\u00eda en una taza. Considerando estos hechos, creo yo que ser\u00eda inexplicable el que las aves acu\u00e1ticas no transportasen las semillas de agua dulce a lagunas y riachuelos despoblados situados en puntos muy distantes. El mismo medio puede haber entrado en juego por lo que se refiere a los huevos de algunos de los animales m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os de agua dulce.<\/em><\/p>\n
