For instance, whether or not there is an open passage from the nostrils to the mouth, the only character, according to Owen, which absolutely distinguishes fishes and reptiles\u2014the inflection of the angle of the lower jaw in Marsupials\u2014the manner in which the wings of insects are folded\u2014mere colour in certain Algae\u2014mere pubescence on parts of the flower in grasses\u2014the nature of the dermal covering, as hair or feathers, in the Vertebrata. If the Ornithorhynchus had been covered with feathers instead of hair, this external and trifling character would have been considered by naturalists as an important aid in determining the degree of affinity of this strange creature to birds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Podr\u00edan citarse numerosos ejemplos de caracteres procedentes de partes que podr\u00edan considerarse como de importancia fisiol\u00f3gica insignificante, pero que universalmente se admite que son util\u00edsimos en la definici\u00f3n de grupos enteros; por ejemplo: el que haya o no una comunicaci\u00f3n abierta entre las aberturas nasales y la boca, \u00fanico car\u00e1cter, seg\u00fan Owen, que separa en absoluto los peces y los reptiles; la inflexi\u00f3n del \u00e1ngulo de la mand\u00edbula inferior en los marsupiales: el modo como est\u00e1n plegadas las alas de los insectos; el solo color en ciertas algas; la simple pubescencia en partes de la flor en las gram\u00edneas; la naturaleza de la envoltura cut\u00e1nea, como el pelo y las plumas, en los vertebrados.
