Constantemente el autor nos recuerda aquella c\u00e9lebre frase acerca de su propio trabajo, que \u00e9l mismo en su autobiograf\u00eda atribuy\u00f3 a Houghton:<\/p>\n

It appears probable that disuse has been the main agent in rendering organs rudimentary. It would at first lead by slow steps to the more and more complete reduction of a part, until at last it became rudimentary\u2014as in the case of the eyes of animals inhabiting dark caverns, and of the wings of birds inhabiting oceanic islands, which have seldom been forced by beasts of prey to take flight, and have ultimately lost the power of flying. Again, an organ, useful under certain conditions, might become injurious under others, as with the wings of beetles living on small and exposed islands; and in this case natural selection will have aided in reducing the organ, until it was rendered harmless and rudimentary.<\/em><\/p>\n

Parece probable que el desuso ha sido el agente principal en la atrofia de los \u00f3rganos. Adem\u00e1s, un \u00f3rgano \u00fatil en ciertas condiciones puede volverse perjudicial en otras, como las alas de los cole\u00f3pteros que viven en islas peque\u00f1as y expuestas a los vientos, y en este caso la selecci\u00f3n natural habr\u00e1 ayudado a la reducci\u00f3n del \u00f3rgano hasta que se volvi\u00f3 inofensivo y rudimentario.<\/em><\/p>\n
