We can to a certain extent understand how it is that there is so much beauty throughout nature; for this may be largely attributed to the agency of selection. That beauty, according to our sense of it, is not universal, must be admitted by every one who will look at some venomous snakes, at some fishes, and at certain hideous bats with a distorted resemblance to the human face. Sexual selection has given the most brilliant colours, elegant patterns, and other ornaments to the males, and sometimes to both sexes of many birds, butterflies and other animals. With birds it has often rendered the voice of the male musical to the female, as well as to our ears. Flowers and fruit have been rendered conspicuous by brilliant colours in contrast with the green foliage, in order that the flowers may be easily seen, visited and fertilised by insects, and the seeds disseminated by birds. How it comes that certain colours, sounds and forms should give pleasure to man and the lower animals, that is, how the sense of beauty in its simplest form was first acquired, we do not know any more than how certain odours and flavours were first rendered agreeable.<\/em><\/p>\n

Podemos comprender, hasta cierto punto, por qu\u00e9 hay tanta belleza por toda la naturaleza, pues esto puede atribuirse, en gran parte, a la acci\u00f3n de la selecci\u00f3n. Que la belleza, seg\u00fan nuestro sentido de ella, no es universal, tiene que ser admitido por todo el que fije su atenci\u00f3n en algunas serpientes venenosas, en algunos peces y en ciertos asquerosos murci\u00e9lagos que tienen una monstruosa semejanza con la cara humana. La selecci\u00f3n sexual ha dado brillant\u00edsimos colores, elegantes dibujos y otros adornos a los machos, y a veces a los dos sexos, de muchas aves, mariposas y otros animales. Por lo que se refiere a las aves, muchas veces ha hecho musical para la hembra, lo mismo que para nuestros o\u00eddos, la voz del macho. Las flores y los frutos han sido hechos aparentes, mediante brillantes colores en contraste con el follaje verde, a fin de que las flores puedan ser f\u00e1cilmente vistas, visitadas y fecundadas por los insectos, y las semillas diseminadas por los p\u00e1jaros. Por qu\u00e9 ocurre que ciertos colores, sonidos y formas dan gusto al hombre y a los animales inferiores -esto es, c\u00f3mo fue adquirido por vez primera el sentido de la belleza en su forma m\u00e1s sencilla-, no lo sabemos, como tampoco sabemos por qu\u00e9 ciertos olores y sabores se hicieron por vez primera agradables.<\/em><\/p>\n
