We can see why there should be so striking a parallelism in the distribution of organic beings throughout space, and in their geological succession throughout time; for in both cases the beings have been connected by the bond of ordinary generation, and the means of modification have been the same. We see the full meaning of the wonderful fact, which has struck every traveller, namely, that on the same continent, under the most diverse conditions, under heat and cold, on mountain and lowland, on deserts and marshes, most of the inhabitants within each great class are plainly related; for they are the descendants of the same progenitors and early colonists. On this same principle of former migration, combined in most cases with modification, we can understand, by the aid of the Glacial period, the identity of some few plants, and the close alliance of many others, on the most distant mountains, and in the northern and southern temperate zones; and likewise the close alliance of some of the inhabitants of the sea in the northern and southern temperate latitudes, though separated by the whole intertropical ocean. Although two countries may present physical conditions as closely similar as the same species ever require, we need feel no surprise at their inhabitants being widely different, if they have been for a long period completely sundered from each other; for as the relation of organism to organism is the most important of all relations, and as the two countries will have received colonists at various periods and in different proportions, from some other country or from each other, the course of modification in the two areas will inevitably have been different.<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Considerando la distribuci\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica, si admitimos que durante el largo transcurso de los tiempos ha habido mucha migraci\u00f3n de una parte a otra del mundo, debida a antiguos cambios geogr\u00e1ficos y de clima y a los muchos medios ocasionales y desconocidos de dispersi\u00f3n, podemos comprender, seg\u00fan la teor\u00eda de la descendencia con modificaci\u00f3n, la mayor parte de los grandes hechos capitales de la distribuci\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica. Comprendemos toda la significaci\u00f3n del hecho portentoso, que ha impresionado a todo viajero, o sea que en un mismo continente, en condiciones las m\u00e1s diversas, con calor y con fr\u00edo, en las monta\u00f1as y las tierras bajas, en los desiertos y en los pantanos, la mayor parte de los habitantes, dentro de cada una de las grandes clases, tienen evidente parentesco, pues son los descendientes de los mismos antepasados, los primeros colonos. Seg\u00fan este mismo principio de antigua emigraci\u00f3n, combinada en la mayor parte de los casos con modificaciones, podemos comprender, con ayuda del per\u00edodo glaciar, la identidad de algunas plantas y el pr\u00f3ximo parentesco de muchas otras que viven en las monta\u00f1as m\u00e1s distantes y en las zonas templadas septentrional y meridional, e igualmente el estrecho parentesco de algunos habitantes del mar en las latitudes templadas del Norte y del Sur, a pesar de estar separados por todo el oc\u00e9ano intertropical.
