Hay algo que han dicho algunos naturalistas que al autor le parece una extra\u00f1a conclusi\u00f3n. El presentarlo as\u00ed, de una manera confusa y ambigua, sirve para reforzar su posici\u00f3n. A estas alturas de la lectura, sabemos bien cu\u00e1l es su posici\u00f3n y que no tiene defensa alguna, digan lo que quieran otros naturalistas.<\/p>\n

Several eminent naturalists have of late published their belief that a multitude of reputed species in each genus are not real species; but that other species are real, that is, have been independently created. This seems to me a strange conclusion to arrive at. They admit that a multitude of forms, which till lately they themselves thought were special creations, and which are still thus looked at by the majority of naturalists, and which consequently have all the external characteristic features of true species\u2014they admit that these have been produced by variation, but they refuse to extend the same view to other and slightly different forms. Nevertheless, they do not pretend that they can define, or even conjecture, which are the created forms of life, and which are those produced by secondary laws. They admit variation as a vera causa in one case, they arbitrarily reject it in another, without assigning any distinction in the two cases. The day will come when this will be given as a curious illustration of the blindness of preconceived opinion. These authors seem no more startled at a miraculous act of creation than at an ordinary birth. But do they really believe that at innumerable periods in the earth’s history certain elemental atoms have been commanded suddenly to flash into living tissues? Do they believe that at each supposed act of creation one individual or many were produced? Were all the infinitely numerous kinds of animals and plants created as eggs or seed, or as full grown? and in the case of mammals, were they created bearing the false marks of nourishment from the mother’s womb? Undoubtedly some of these same questions cannot be answered by those who believe in the appearance or creation of only a few forms of life or of some one form alone. It has been maintained by several authors that it is as easy to believe in the creation of a million beings as of one; but Maupertuis’ philosophical axiom \u00abof least action\u00bb leads the mind more willingly to admit the smaller number; and certainly we ought not to believe that innumerable beings within each great class have been created with plain, but deceptive, marks of descent from a single parent.<\/em><\/p>\n

Varios naturalistas eminentes han manifestado recientemente su opini\u00f3n de que una multitud de supuestas especies dentro de cada g\u00e9nero no son especies reales; pero que otras especies son reales, esto es, que han sido creadas independientemente. Esto me parece que es llegar a una extra\u00f1a conclusi\u00f3n. Admiten que una multitud de formas, que hasta hace poco cre\u00edan ellos mismos que eran creaciones especiales, y que son consideradas todav\u00eda as\u00ed por la mayor parte de los naturalistas, y que, por consiguiente, tienen todos los rasgos caracter\u00edsticos extremos de verdaderas especies; admiten, s\u00ed, que \u00e9stas han sido producidas por variaci\u00f3n, pero se niegan a hacer extensiva la misma opini\u00f3n a otras formas poco diferentes. Vendr\u00e1 el d\u00eda en que esto se citar\u00e1 como un ejemplo de la ceguera de la opini\u00f3n preconcebida. Estos autores parecen no asombrarse m\u00e1s de un acto milagroso o de creaci\u00f3n que de un nacimiento ordinario. Pero \u00bfcreen realmente que en innumerables per\u00edodos de la historia de la Tierra ciertos \u00e1tomos elementales han recibido la orden de formar de repente tejidos vivientes? \u00bfCreen que en cada supuesto acto de creaci\u00f3n se produjeron muchos o un individuos? Las infinitas clases de animales y plantas \u00bffueron creadas todas como huevos o semillas, o por completo desarrolladas? Y, en el caso de los mam\u00edferos, \u00bffueron \u00e9stos creados llevando la falsa se\u00f1al de la nutrici\u00f3n por el \u00fatero de la madre? Indudablemente, algunas de estas mismas preguntas no pueden ser contestadas por los que creen en la aparici\u00f3n o creaci\u00f3n de s\u00f3lo un corto n\u00famero de formas org\u00e1nicas o de alguna forma solamente. Diversos autores han sostenido que es tan f\u00e1cil creer en la creaci\u00f3n de un mill\u00f3n de seres como en la de uno; pero el axioma filos\u00f3fico de Maupertuis, de la menor acci\u00f3n nos lleva con m\u00e1s gusto a admitir el menor n\u00famero, y ciertamente no necesitamos creer que han sido creados innumerables seres dentro de cada una de las grandes clases con se\u00f1ales patentes, pero enga\u00f1osas, de ser descendientes de un solo antepasado.<\/em><\/p>\n
