El hecho de que en el ciclo de crecimiento de los vegetales base de los biocombustibles se consuma CO<SUB>2<\/SUB>, ha permitido generalizar la idea de que el uso de los biocombustibles puede ayudar a la lucha contra el efecto invernadero. Ambos estudios han tenido en cuenta por primera vez el efecto que tienen en el balance neto de emisiones de CO<SUB>2<\/SUB> la transformaci\u00f3n de ecosistemas naturales en tierras de cultivo necesaria para cubrir la creciente demanda de biocombustibles. De acuerdo a los resultados del estudio, la mayor\u00eda de los biocombustibles actuales emiten m\u00e1s cantidad de gases de efecto invernadero que los combustibles f\u00f3siles que tienen como objetivo sustituir ya que, directa o indirectamente, est\u00e1n provocando la transformaci\u00f3n de ecosistemas naturales en tierras para cultivar. La transformaci\u00f3n de los ecosistemas naturales en tierras agr\u00edcolas conlleva una emisi\u00f3n en forma de CO<SUB>2<\/SUB> del carbono almacenado en las plantas y suelos originales que es mucho mayor que el ahorro en CO<SUB>2<\/SUB> provocado por el uso de los biocombustibles producidos en ellas. Los autores del estudio eval\u00faan que la conversi\u00f3n de los ecosistemas naturales (terrenos boscosos, praderas, humedales, sabanas,.. ) en Estados Unidos, Indonesia o Brasil en terrenos para el cultivo de ma\u00edz, ca\u00f1a de az\u00facar, palma o soja emiten entre 17 o 420 veces m\u00e1s \u00f3xidos de carbono que el ahorro anual en emisiones de CO<SUB>2<\/SUB> por la sustituci\u00f3n de los combustibles f\u00f3siles por los biocombustibles generados. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = \"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office\" \/><o:p><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P> <P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 1.2pt 0cm 3.6pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 150%; TEXT-ALIGN: justify; mso-outline-level: 3\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 150%; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold\">Por ello, los autores concluyen en la necesidad de plantear evaluaciones globales del impacto de los biocombustibles actuales incluyendo las implicaciones asociadas a la conversi\u00f3n de habitats naturales en tierras de cultivo que pueden acelerar los efectos del cambio clim\u00e1tico. Los biocombustibles pueden ser \u00fatiles como alternativa a los combustibles f\u00f3siles siempre y cuando se utilicen aproximaciones que no requieran la transformaci\u00f3n de habitats naturales en tierras agr\u00edcolas. En ese sentido s<\/SPAN><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 150%; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: Batang; mso-fareast-language: KO\">e deben potenciar tecnolog\u00edas capaces de producir biocombustibles de forma eficiente a partir de biomasa que no requiera la creaci\u00f3n de nuevas tierras cultivables: residuos agr\u00edcolas, residuos de praderas y bosques o cultivos energ\u00e9ticos no alimentarios producidos en terrenos agr\u00edcolas abandonados. <o:p><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P> <P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 1.2pt 0cm 3.6pt;
