Endre Szemer\u00e9di naci\u00f3 en Budapest (Hungr\u00eda) el 21 de agosto de 1940. Estudi\u00f3 en la Universidad E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd en Budapest y se doctor\u00f3 en la Universidad Estatal de Mosc\u00fa, siendo su director de tesis Israel Gelfand.
