Fokas est\u00e1 considerado como uno de los matem\u00e1ticos griegos m\u00e1s importantes, aunque a los 18 a\u00f1os march\u00f3 al Reino Unido para estudiar Aeron\u00e1utica en el Imperial College en Londres. Su gran amor eran sin embargo las matem\u00e1ticas, as\u00ed que hizo su tesis doctoral en este campo en Caltech en 1979. No acabaron ah\u00ed sus inquietudes disciplinares, as\u00ed que tambi\u00e9n estudi\u00f3 Medicina en la Universidad de Miami, obteniendo su t\u00edtulo en 1986.
