Lax naci\u00f3 en Budapest, Hungr\u00eda, en una familia jud\u00eda, el 1 de mayo de 1926. Sus padres eran m\u00e9dicos, en una Budapest cosmopolita, en la que Lax creci\u00f3 en un ambiente intelectual. Hablando con \u00e9l en una ocasi\u00f3n le confes\u00e9 mi admiraci\u00f3n por los novelistas h\u00fangaros, en particular por Sandor Marai, y Lax me contest\u00f3: \u201cS\u00ed, lo conoc\u00eda, ven\u00eda mucho por nuestra casa\u201d.
