Fue un estudiante extraordinario, con un gran talento para las matem\u00e1ticas, pero que no termin\u00f3 la escuela secundaria. Se traslad\u00f3 a Mosc\u00fa con 16 a\u00f1os, y desempe\u00f1\u00f3 diversos empleos, asistiendo a la vez por libre a seminarios de matem\u00e1ticas, y, directamente, a los 19 a\u00f1os fue admitido en la Universidad Estatal de Mosc\u00fa, donde realiz\u00f3 su tesis doctoral bajo la direcci\u00f3n del gran matem\u00e1tico Andr\u00e9i Kolmogorov. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">La tesis de Gelfand trat\u00f3 sobre la teor\u00eda de anillos conmutativos normados, que revel\u00f3 conexiones nuevas entre el an\u00e1lisis funcional de Banach y el an\u00e1lisis cl\u00e1sico.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Gelfand trabaj\u00f3 en la Academia de Ciencias desde 1935 hasta 1941, cuando fue nombrado profesor de la Universidad Estatal de Mosc\u00fa. <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">En 1990 emigr\u00f3 a Estados Unidos, como profesor visitante de la Universidad de Rutgers. Tambi\u00e9n se hizo cargo de una c\u00e1tedra en los departamentos de Matem\u00e1ticas y Biolog\u00eda en el Instituto de Matem\u00e1ticas Discretas y Ciencias de la Computaci\u00f3n de esa universidad.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><o:p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blogs\/matematicas\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/69\/files\/1705\/o_gelfand_2.jpg\"><br \/><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><br \/><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">La investigaci\u00f3n<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Israel Gelfand hizo importantes contribuciones a muchas \u00e1reas de las matem\u00e1ticas, como el an\u00e1lisis funcional, teor\u00eda de la representaci\u00f3n, \u00e1lgebras de operadores, ecuaciones en derivadas parciales. Este ingente trabajo se recoge en unos 500 art\u00edculos de investigaci\u00f3n, una cifra enorme en matem\u00e1ticas. Como autor prol\u00edfico y por esa gran variedad de temas, fue comparado en ocasiones a matem\u00e1ticos de la talla de Euler o Gauss (que por cierto, consta entre sus ascendientes geneal\u00f3gicos matem\u00e1ticos). Una consulta a MathSciNet nos informa adem\u00e1s los miles de citas que sus trabajos merecieron en todos estos a\u00f1os.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Aparte de sus investigaciones sobre la teor\u00eda de funciones delq ue hemos hablado, en los a\u00f1os 40 comenz\u00f3 a trabajar sobre las representaciones de grupos no compactos. El trabajo sobre representaciones de grupos le llev\u00f3 a estudiar geometr\u00eda integral y<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>s\u00ed al estudio de la transformada de Radon. Sus trabajos sobre la cohomolog\u00eda de \u00e1lgebras de Lie de dimensi\u00f3n infinita son tambi\u00e9n de gran importancia.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Otro tema fue el estudio del problema inverso de Sturm-Liouville en ecuaciones diferenciales.
