\"\"It\u2019s a no brainer<\/strong>: obstacle-free exchange between research and industry will bring benefits to both, and above all will have positive repercussions for society. But despite the evidence, businesses and research labs view each other as alien worlds. Changing this view is one of the challenges of the new European Commission funded Initial Training Network (ITN) awarded to the CNIC (FP7-PEOPLE-2013-ITN). The ITN, called CardioNext, started in the last quarter of 2013.<\/p>\n

This month we have managed to finish the recruitment process. The CardioNext predoctoral researchers were chosen after a rigorous selection process and are among the best graduates from several universities. Each is supervised by a CNIC researcher\u2014Alicia G. Arroyo, Mercedes Ricote, Enrique Lara-Pezzi, Jes\u00fas M\u00aa V\u00e1zquez, Jes\u00fas M\u00aa Ruiz-Cabello, Borja Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez, or Valent\u00edn Fuster.<\/p>\n

In addition, each trainee will receive direction and advice from a mentor in one of the many private, public and non-profit organizations associated with the project (Bio-Rad Laboratories<\/a>, CROmed Research and Service Centers<\/a>, Exiqon<\/a>, Instituto de Medicina Gen\u00f3mica<\/a>, Mastercell<\/a>, Metabolon<\/a>, miRagen Therapeutics<\/a>, Novartis<\/a>, Philips Healthcare Iberia<\/a>, SilicoLife<\/a>, Thermos Fisher Scientific<\/a>, uniQure<\/a>, WITec Wissenschaftliche Instrumente und Technologies<\/a>, G\u00e9n\u00e9thon<\/a>, Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics<\/a>, EMBO Molecular Medicine<\/a>, Cardiovascular Research Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine<\/a>, Imperial College London<\/a>, Johns Hopkins University<\/a>, London Research Institute-Cancer Research<\/a>, Ecole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne<\/a>, Swiss Federal Institute of technology Zurich<\/a>, University of Oxford<\/a>, and University San Pablo-CEU<\/a>). The training offered in the frame of this project is extensive and broad, so that on completing the program, students will be able to choose among careers in academic research, the private sector, patent protection and science communication, or they might even be inspired to launch their own start-up.
