En Espa\u00f1a, existen cianobacterias t\u00f3xicas en embalses de agua. En IMDEA agua, se esta trabajando en el desarrollo de herramientas eficaces que permitan monitorizar la presencia de estos organismos t\u00f3xicos en aguas.<\/p>\n<p>Cyanobacteria are a group of bacteria comonly found in water bodies around the world. In Spain, toxic cyanobacteria are present in water reservoirs. At IMDEA, we are developing effictive modern tools to monitor the presence of these toxic organisms in the Spanish waters.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">[Rehab El-Shehawy. IMDEA Agua]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Las cianobacterias son un grupo diverso de bacterias. Obtienen su energ\u00eda de la luz y liberan ox\u00edgeno. Se encuentran entre las formas de vida m\u00e1s antiguas en la Tierra y se cree que oxigenaron el ambiente haciendo posible la vida en la tierra. Adem\u00e1s, las cianobacterias han desempe\u00f1ado un papel vital en el cambio de las formas de vida en nuestro planeta, ya que los cloroplastos de las plantas y de las algas han evolucionado a partir de ancestros de cianobacterias.<\/p>\n<p>Por otra parte, las cianobacterias son importantes actores en los ciclos nutrientes globales. Contribuyen significativamente a la cantidad de carbono y nitrogeno y, por tanto, son relevantes para el medio ambiente. Estas herramientas combinadas con apropiados indicadores qu\u00edmicos y ambientales, componen un sistema de alerta temprana espec\u00edfica y sensible para el seguimiento y la evaluaci\u00f3n del riesgo provocado por cianobacterias t\u00f3xicas. Este sistema proporcionar\u00e1 una base s\u00f3lida que precisa las medidas a tomar para asegurar un tratamiento efectivo de agua potable y la gesti\u00f3n sostenible de las masas de agua en Espa\u00f1a.<\/p>\n<p>Cyanobacteria are a diverse group of bacteria existing almost everywhere on the globe. They obtain their energy from light and release oxygen. They are among the oldest life forms on earth and it is thought that they have oxygenated the atmosphere making life on earth possible. In addition, chloroplasts of plants and algae have evolved from cyanobacterial ancestors, magnifying the vital role played by these bacteria in changing life forms on our planet.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, cyanobacteria are important players in the global nutrient cycles. They contribute significantly to the global carbon and nitrogen budgets. Therefore, they are significantly important for the environment. Furthermore, they also have biotechnological and medical applications.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, some cyanobacteria produce toxic compound, which are toxic to mammals including humans. Blooms (large aggregates accumulated on -or near- the surface of water) of toxic cyanobacteria, especially those developing in water bodies used for drinking purposes, concern environmentalists and policy makers worldwide due to their environmental, economical, and public health implications.<\/p>\n<p>In Spain, cyanobacteria grow in main Spanish rivers and reservoirs. Blooms develop at least once per year in some of these reservoirs and include species that produce a potent liver toxin.<\/p>\n<p>At IMDEA-Agua, we are developing modern tools to indentify toxic cyanobacteria in the Spanish waters. Such tools, when combined with the appropriate chemical and environmental indicators, will compose a specific and sensitive early warning system for monitoring and assessment of toxic cyanobacterial hazard.
