Concretamente, la tecnolog\u00eda de la \u00f3smosis inversa (OI) es la m\u00e1s usada en desalaci\u00f3n a nivel mundial por lo que genera un volumen cada vez mayor de m\u00f3dulos de membrana que una vez han alcanzado el fin de su vida \u00fatil, son depositados en los vertederos. Todo ello est\u00e1 haciendo necesario el enfoque de nuevas l\u00edneas de investigaci\u00f3n para conseguir que las membranas desechadas dejen de ser un residuo y se conviertan en un recurso siguiendo as\u00ed el modelo de econom\u00eda circular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Serena Molina y Junkal Landaburu \u2013 Instituto IMDEA Agua<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">La econom\u00eda actual sigue un modelo lineal. Esto se traduce en que a partir de un recurso, se fabrica un producto, se consume y se deshecha. Si se necesita otro producto, el proceso comienza de nuevo para finalmente acabar desechando otro producto. Este modelo es el reflejo de una \u00e9poca en que los recursos y la energ\u00eda se cre\u00edan ilimitados y eran f\u00e1ciles de obtener. Asimismo, no hab\u00eda conciencia de las graves consecuencias medioambientales que este comportamiento pod\u00eda acarrear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Los procesos industriales que emplean la tecnolog\u00eda de membrana no son una excepci\u00f3n del modelo de econom\u00eda actual, ya que cuando las membranas dejan de ser eficaces en el proceso, se desechan y normalmente acaban en un vertedero. Esta soluci\u00f3n, adem\u00e1s de ser perjudicial para el medio ambiente, es cara y est\u00e1 totalmente en contra de los objetivos de la UE para avanzar hacia un sistema de econom\u00eda circular. La econom\u00eda circular pretende conseguir que los productos mantengan su utilidad, minimizando los residuos y el uso de nuevos recursos. Para ello, se deben tomar medidas en todas las etapas del ciclo de vida del producto, desde la obtenci\u00f3n de materias primas, el dise\u00f1o de productos y materiales hasta la gesti\u00f3n de residuos y el reciclaje.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">La tecnolog\u00eda de membranas es una tecnolog\u00eda madura en la que continuamente se investiga y se consiguen avances para mantener las membranas el mayor tiempo posible dentro de la cadena de valor de sus procesos. Algunos aspectos estudiados son: la fabricaci\u00f3n de nuevos materiales para obtener membranas con mejor rendimiento, el empleo de pretratamientos m\u00e1s eficientes, la limpieza y el reciclaje de membranas. Todas estas acciones pueden conducir a que la tecnolog\u00eda de membranas avance hacia una econom\u00eda m\u00e1s circular [1].<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">El Grupo de Tecnolog\u00eda de Membranas de IMDEA Agua quiere contribuir a ello y est\u00e1 centrando sus esfuerzos en el reciclaje y reutilizaci\u00f3n de membranas. Con ello se pretende encontrar una v\u00eda alternativa al vertedero para aquellas membranas que ya no son v\u00e1lidas y que han sido desechadas por desaladoras. De esta forma, dejar\u00e1n de ser un residuo para convertirse en un nuevo recurso y podr\u00e1n reutilizarse en otras etapas del tratamiento de aguas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Con esta filosof\u00eda el grupo de membranas participa en el Proyecto regional REMTAVARES S2013\/MAE-2716, llevando a cabo la investigaci\u00f3n sobre la modificaci\u00f3n de membranas de ultrafiltraci\u00f3n (UF) y nanofiltraci\u00f3n (NF) recicladas. Estas membranas recicladas han sido obtenidas mediante la transformaci\u00f3n de membranas de \u00f3smosis inversa (OI) que ya han llegado al final de su vida \u00fatil y que han sido desechadas por plantas de desalaci\u00f3n. IMDEA Agua cuenta con un stock de membranas deterioradas de plantas desaladoras gestionadas por SADYT y VALORIZA Agua bajo el marco del proyecto europeo LIFE+13 ENV\/ES\/000751 TRANSFOMEM, que ya se encuentra en fase piloto (http:\/\/www.life-transfomem.eu\/). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">En el proyecto REMTAVARES, la modificaci\u00f3n de las membranas recicladas tiene la finalidad de mejorar su rendimiento y selectividad para la eliminaci\u00f3n de contaminantes emergentes de aguas residuales procedentes de hospitales. El uso generalizado de los productos farmac\u00e9uticos ha dado lugar a una descarga continua de esos productos y sus metabolitos en las aguas residuales. Adem\u00e1s, estos compuestos activos podr\u00edan llegar a las fuentes de agua a trav\u00e9s de aguas residuales de las personas por eliminaci\u00f3n inapropiada de medicamentos (por ejemplo, arroj\u00e1ndolos por el inodoro); o por medio de residuos l\u00edquidos agr\u00edcolas o el esti\u00e9rcol del ganado. Este tema despierta una gran preocupaci\u00f3n pues a\u00fan no se conocen con certeza sus efectos. Hay estudios que apuntan hacia una posible alteraci\u00f3n de las funciones endocrinas de los organismos acu\u00e1ticos y de los seres humanos, y que se acumulan en la cadena alimentaria, con los consiguientes riesgos que supondr\u00eda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" Esta modificaci\u00f3n superficial se realiza en condiciones suaves, proporcionando una ruta f\u00e1cil y no agresiva que permite funcionalizar la superficie de manera sencilla [2,3]. Aprovechando la versatilidad de este recubrimiento, se podr\u00e1n introducir en su superficie macromol\u00e9culas como Jefaminas o Quitosano que aportar\u00e1n hidrofilia a la membrana, lo que se traducir\u00e1 en una mayor resistencia al \u00ab<span><em>biofouling<\/em><\/span>\u00bb o ensuciamiento biol\u00f3gico. Los primeros resultados de estas modificaciones superficiales son muy positivos y esperanzadores, pues las membranas modificadas recuperan un mayor porcentaje de flujo de agua tras realizarse ensayos de ensuciamiento con prote\u00ednas. Por otro lado, jugando con las concentraciones y los tiempos de modificaci\u00f3n empleados, podr\u00eda abrirse un amplio abanico de aplicaciones para estas membranas recicladas que evitar\u00eda su dep\u00f3sito en los vertederos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">En este sentido, el Grupo de Tecnolog\u00eda de membranas trabaja ya en otro proyecto nacional dentro del programa estatal de investigaci\u00f3n, desarrollo e innovaci\u00f3n orientada a los retos de la sociedad recientemente concedido, INREMEM (CTM2015-65348-C2). Se trata de un proyecto coordinado en el que IMDEA Agua colabora con el Departamento de F\u00edsica Aplicada I de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. En este caso, IMDEA Agua investiga las nuevas aplicaciones de las membranas recicladas para el tratamiento de aguas residuales urbanas mediante el uso de biorreactores de membrana (BRM), para la regeneraci\u00f3n de disoluciones osm\u00f3ticas mediante la electrodi\u00e1lisis (ED) y para el tratamiento de aguas superficiales con biomembranas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">La investigaci\u00f3n sobre el aprovechamiento de membranas desechadas podr\u00eda llegar a convertirse en un reto ambiental, social e industrial tanto a nivel nacional como internacional.
