El brote, que se inici\u00f3 en febrero de 2006 y ha tardado 20 meses en ser controlado, ha afectado a 252 pacientes, de los que 101 han fallecido. En 18 casos \u00abla muerte fue atribuible a la bacteria\u00bb, seg\u00fan la investigaci\u00f3n del hospital, y en el resto, pacientes ya muy graves, fue \u00abun elemento contribuyente, pero no determinante\u00bb.<o:p><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P> <P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; TEXT-ALIGN: justify\"><SPAN lang=ES style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Comic Sans MS'\">Las alarmas saltaron en la UCI el 16 de febrero de 2006 tras diagnosticarse el tercer caso de infecci\u00f3n por acinetobacter en la UCI. Situaci\u00f3n \u00abpreocupante pero casi rutinaria, porque estas infecciones son algo a lo que nos enfrentamos muy a menudo\u00bb.<o:p><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P> <P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; TEXT-ALIGN: justify\"><SPAN lang=ES style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Comic Sans MS'\">Poco a poco, el acinetobacter fue desplegando sus <B><SPAN style=\"COLOR: blue\">dos principales caracter\u00edsticas: la facilidad para expandirse y desarrollar resistencias a los antibi\u00f3ticos<\/SPAN><\/B>. \u00abRozas a un enfermo que la tenga en la piel y, si no te desinfectas las manos de inmediato, la vas dejando en todo lo que tocas\u00bb.<o:p><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P> <P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in; TEXT-ALIGN: justify\"><SPAN lang=ES style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Comic Sans MS'\">En los meses siguientes, la bacteria se hizo fuerte en la UCI y desde all\u00ed se extendi\u00f3 a otros servicios del hospital: medicina interna y plantas de enfermos quir\u00fargicos. Y lo que fue a\u00fan peor se hizo resistente a los antibi\u00f3ticos disponibles. De las decenas de principios activos, el acinetobacter s\u00f3lo era sensible a uno en febrero de 2006, la <B><SPAN style=\"COLOR: blue\">colistina<\/SPAN><\/B>. Meses despu\u00e9s, sin embargo, ni este f\u00e1rmaco pod\u00eda ya matarlo. En al menos tres pacientes, de los m\u00e1s de 252 afectados, la cepa desarroll\u00f3 resistencias y el centro tuvo que \u00abpedir autorizaci\u00f3n para usar un antibi\u00f3tico que entonces a\u00fan no estaba comercializado, la <B><SPAN style=\"COLOR: blue\">tigeciclina<\/SPAN><\/B>\u00ab, explica Montero.<o:p><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P><!--more--><P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify\"><SPAN lang=ES style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Comic Sans MS'\">En Europa el m\u00e1s parecido es el ocurrido en el norte de Francia en la segunda mitad de 2003, cuando otra cepa multirresistente de Acinetobacter fue identificada en 21 hospitales, en los que infect\u00f3 a 118 pacientes y caus\u00f3 18 muertes, seg\u00fan un inform\u00f3 de <\/SPAN><st1:personname productid=\"la Direcci?n General\"><SPAN lang=ES style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Comic Sans MS'\">la Direcci\u00f3n General<\/SPAN><\/st1:personname><SPAN lang=ES style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Comic Sans MS'\"> de Salud del Gobierno franc\u00e9s.<o:p><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P> <P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify\"><SPAN lang=ES style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Comic Sans MS'\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P> <P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify\"><B><SPAN lang=ES style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: blue; FONT-FAMILY: 'Comic Sans MS'\">Este brote nosocomial de Acinetobacter, probablemente con un mecanismo de transmisi\u00f3n persona a persona, debe ser utilizado para ser conscientes de un problema mundial: las infecciones hospitalarias por bacterias cada vez m\u00e1s resistentes a los antibi\u00f3ticos. <o:p><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/B><\/P> <P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; Tanto la persistencia sobre superficies secas como su presencia en la piel del personal sanitario, contribuyen a la transmisi\u00f3n cruzada entre pacientes<\/SPAN><\/B>. De esta manera, para prevenir o minimizar potenciales brotes, es esencial el cumplimiento de las medidas de \u00f3ptimo control de infecciones. <o:p><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P> <P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt;
