En Espa\u00f1a somos muy conscientes de los devastadores efectos de los incendios forestales<\/FONT><\/A> (ver tambi\u00e9n este art\u00edculo de la Revista Ecosistemas<\/FONT><\/A>), si bien nadie puede negar que forma una parte consustancial de muchos de nuestros ecosistemas<\/SPAN><\/B>. Tambi\u00e9n hemos hablado de sus repercusiones sobre la salud humana<\/FONT><\/A>. Sin embargo, se trata de bagatelas cuando se compara con la quema residuos e cosechas<\/SPAN><\/B>, y lo que es peor a\u00fan, de ecosistemas pr\u00edstinos<\/SPAN><\/B> en otras partes del mundo. La incidencia de los incendios forestales en el SE Asi\u00e1tico sigue aumentando<\/FONT><\/A>, conforme lo hace la deforestaci\u00f3n de tierras v\u00edrgenes<\/SPAN><\/B>. Y esta \u00faltima lo hace a su vez seg\u00fan aumentan las demandas de biocombustibles<\/FONT><\/A>. Resulta por tanto rocambolesco que algunos ecologistas de sal\u00f3n, llamen mentirosos a medio mundo, cuando defienden la agroenerg\u00e9tica, y se queden tan orondos. \u00bfCu\u00e1l es pues la frontera entre la \u201ccultura verde\u201d y el terrorismo ecol\u00f3gico<\/FONT><\/A>?  <\/SPAN>En el SE asi\u00e1tico<\/SPAN><\/B>, el incesante crecimiento de la poblaci\u00f3n requiere la nueva puesta de tierras en cultivo<\/SPAN><\/B>. M\u00e1s a\u00fan, la demanda de aceite de palma<\/SPAN><\/B> para los biocombustibles<\/SPAN><\/B> y otros usos, est\u00e1 generando la demolici\u00f3n de ecosistemas cuya biodiversidad aun se desconoce<\/SPAN><\/B>. Muchas de tales actividades se realizan sobre bosques tropicales que, a menudo, crecen sobre turberas<\/SPAN><\/B> con muchos metros de espesor, por lo que su drenaje para la reclamaci\u00f3n agr\u00edcola desprende ingentes cantidades de gases de invernadero<\/SPAN><\/B>. Especialmente en Indonesia,<\/SPAN><\/B> durante la estaci\u00f3n seca<\/SPAN><\/B>, el n\u00famero e incidencia de los fuegos aumente incesantemente<\/SPAN><\/B> (pinchar en este enlace<\/FONT><\/A>). El problema es tan grave que los gobiernos de los pa\u00edses vecinos se lamentan de las graves repercusiones que vecinos pir\u00f3manos generan en sus econom\u00edas<\/SPAN><\/B> (turismo), vida cotidiana<\/SPAN><\/B> (smog que tiende a complicar la visibilidad viaria y de sus aeropuertos) y la salud de su poblaci\u00f3n que respira un aire insano y cargado de <\/SPAN><\/B>part\u00edculas (peor que el que se conoce en las ciudades m\u00e1s contaminadas del mundo<\/SPAN><\/B>).  <\/SPAN>Los efectos sobre la salud humana<\/FONT><\/A> comienzan a ser m\u00e1s que serios<\/SPAN><\/B>, como podr\u00e9is observar en las tres noticias que os exponemos m\u00e1s abajo. Tales pr\u00e1cticas, como ya comentamos se realizan durante la estaci\u00f3n seca. Sin embargo, estudios recientes confirman que son las actividades humanas y no los ciclos de sequ\u00eda o el cambio clim\u00e1tico sus verdaderos responsables<\/SPAN><\/B>. <\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

Siempre cabe pensar que las necesidades alimentarias de una poblaci\u00f3n hambrienta<\/SPAN><\/B>, subyace a este tipo de impacto ambiental. Sin embargo, ya la primera nota de prensa advierte que la agricultura tradicional no resulta ser la principal responsable del problema<\/SPAN><\/B>, por cuanto va siendo desplaza por la industrial a gran escala<\/SPAN><\/B>, como ocurre en Kalimantan<\/B><\/SPAN>. Los efectos<\/SPAN><\/B> de esta \u00faltima son mucho m\u00e1s devastadores<\/SPAN>, <\/B>por cuanto afectan a extensiones enormes. Y bien sabemos quien suele estar detr\u00e1s. Empresas multinacionales a quines tan solo les importan sus propios beneficios,<\/SPAN><\/B> con independencia de que se expolie a la naturaleza, o se asesinen ni\u00f1os y ancianos. Y mientras tanto, las autoridades espa\u00f1olas hablan de lucha contra el cambio clim\u00e1tico y desarrollo sostenible defendiendo los biocombustibles<\/SPAN><\/B>, cuando la verdad es que trabajan para una siniestra ONG denominada \u201chumo sin fronteras\u201d.   <\/SPAN><\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

Although severe drought provides the conditions conducive for forest fires, it is often humans who are actually responsible<\/SPAN><\/B>. Many of the fires are deliberately<\/SPAN><\/B> started to free up land for agriculture<\/SPAN><\/B>. The sustained burning of biomass not only releases the greenhouse gases<\/SPAN><\/B> carbon dioxide and methane but also large quantities of carbon monoxide and particulate matter<\/SPAN><\/B>.<\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

The large forest fires<\/SPAN><\/B> that sweep through <\/SPAN>Indonesia<\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/B><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> in dry periods are not only the result of severe drought<\/SPAN><\/B>. A team of researchers, including Veni grant winner Guido van der Werf, has analysed the density of smog during forest fires<\/SPAN><\/B>. They have now established that the intensity of the forest fires is directly linked to population density and land use<\/SPAN><\/B>.<\/SPAN> <\/SPAN>Nature Geoscience<\/SPAN><\/B> published the results of the research on 22 February. <\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

 <\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

The biggest problem of the fires in Indonesia is not the fire itself but the poisonous smoke released<\/SPAN><\/B>. Due to this smoke, the number of people killed by fires in Indonesia is probably many times higher than that in Australia this year.<\/SPAN><\/B> <\/SPAN>Furthermore, the smog also causes severe damage to the environment<\/SPAN><\/B>. <\/SPAN>The researchers used the thick smoke produced by the Indonesian fires to analyse the forest fires. Due to a lack of good satellite images, little is known about fires that took place before the 1990s<\/SPAN><\/B>. <\/SPAN>The researchers solved this problem by using other data recorded daily during the past fifty years, namely the visibility observations and meteorological data from airports.  <\/SPAN>One of the most interesting results from the study was that low rainfall in <\/SPAN><\/B><\/SPAN>Sumatra<\/SPAN><\/B><\/st1:place> has been resulting in fires since at least 1960, while in <\/SPAN><\/B>Kalimantan<\/SPAN><\/B><\/st1:place> this has only been the case since 1980<\/SPAN><\/B>. <\/SPAN>Kalimantan<\/SPAN><\/st1:place> was fairly resistant to dry periods up until 1980, but since then <\/SPAN>Kalimantan<\/SPAN><\/st1:place> has become far more prone to fires prone during drought years. The population of <\/SPAN>Sumatra<\/SPAN><\/st1:place> grew rapidly in the 1960s. <\/SPAN>However, a comparable increase in the population<\/SPAN><\/B> was not seen in Kalimantan until the 1980s. <\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

The rising population on <\/SPAN><\/B>Kalimantan<\/SPAN><\/B><\/st1:place> was accompanied by a change in land use from small-scale subsistence agriculture to large-scale industrial agriculture and agroforestry<\/SPAN><\/B>. <\/SPAN>In order to support this change, large areas of peatlands were drained and deforestation took place on a grand scale<\/SPAN><\/B>. <\/SPAN>These changes in land use and population density made <\/SPAN><\/B><\/SPAN>Kalimantan<\/SPAN><\/B><\/st1:place> far more fire prone<\/SPAN><\/B>. <\/SPAN>Although the enormous influence of this man-made change was already suspected, this is the first time that these claims have been substantiated by reliable data. <\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

In the dry season, Indonesian farmers burn forests to clear land for agriculture, causing a smoky haze that spreads across the region, affecting tourism and increasing health problems<\/SPAN><\/B>. \u00abWe have special aeroplanes which can be used to carry out water bombing,\u00bb the Sunday Star quoted Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak as saying. <\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>

Smoke from the fires is causing haze that is drifting across neighbouring <\/SPAN><\/B><\/SPAN>Malaysia<\/SPAN><\/B><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, where authorities<\/SPAN><\/B> said Sunday air quality and visibility<\/SPAN><\/B> in some areas had fallen from \u00abgood\u00bb to \u00abmoderate\u00bb over the previous week. Most of the illegal fires were the result of land and forest clearing for traditional farming and palm oil plantations<\/B><\/SPAN>,<\/SPAN><\/B> forestry ministry official Israr Albar said. <\/o:p><\/SPAN><\/P>
