Este joven investigador ha realizado un trabajo formidable, analizando los suelos a lo largo de un transecto de m\u00e1s de 2.000 km<sup>2<\/sup>, desde el Norte de Namibia hasta la provincia del Cabo en Sud\u00e1frica. Tal fue el motivo de su Tesis Doctoral (2008), que desde hace unos meses se puede bajar libremente de Internet. Alemania es uno de los pa\u00edses de Europa que m\u00e1s fuertemente ha apostado por el acceso abierto. Y este es el resultado. Abajo os proporciono el enlace. Andreas abri\u00f3 m\u00e1s de 600 perfiles y recolect\u00f3 200 muestras adicionales de los horizontes superficiales del suelo. Impresionante trabajo realizado en el contexto de un proyecto denominado \u201cBiota \u00c1frica\u201d. Su objetivo result\u00f3 ser el estudio de la edafodiversidad y sus relaciones con la biodiversidad. Sin embargo, el material que proporciona transciende a los prop\u00f3sitos perseguidos. Realmente lo que nos presenta el autor es una verdadera excursi\u00f3n edafol\u00f3gica por los ambientes \u00e1ridos de \u00c1frica del Sur. Un trabajo tit\u00e1nico, impresionante, de los de \u201cantes\u201d. Ya ha publicado parte de los resultados obtenidos en la revista <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">Geoderma<\/span><\/b>. Debo suponer que a este le seguir\u00e1n otros art\u00edculos. Obviamente, las <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">clasificaciones<\/span><\/b> y aproximaciones <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">\u201cad hoc\u201d<\/span><\/b> pueden ajustarse mejor que <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">las taxonom\u00edas de suelos universales<\/span><\/b>, con vistas a llevar a cabo este tipo de comparaciones, si bien no son estrictamente necesarias. \u00c9l lo demostr\u00f3, pero a su vez, al hacer uso de la<b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\"> WRB<\/span><\/b>, constat\u00f3 que tal vinculaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n era estad\u00edsticamente significativa. Como os he reiterado en numerosas ocasiones, es posible y viable desarrollar productos \u201cad hoc\u201d que se ajusten un poco mejor, \u201ccon un prop\u00f3sito concreto\u201d, que las taxonom\u00edas cl\u00e1sicas. Tal aserto es v\u00e1lido para cualquier \u00e1mbito del conocimiento cient\u00edfico. Empero <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">son las universales las que permiten la comparaci\u00f3n de resultados<\/span><\/b> llevados a cabo por diferentes investigadores en ambientes muy dispares. Os animo a que la le\u00e1is, si dispon\u00e9is de tiempo e inter\u00e9s. <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">Tal cantidad de detalles no pueden encontrarse en los art\u00edculos de impacto<\/span><\/b>, por cuanto se castran los datos hasta el minimalismo absoluto. Sin embargo, <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">una tesis en acceso abierto permite recuperarlos y darle otros fines, como<\/span><\/b> las implementaciones de <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">bases de datos en el continente africano<\/span><\/b>, que son necesarios, dada la escasez de informaci\u00f3n actual. Por todas estas razones, invitamos a \u00e9l u otras personas de su departamento a que impartieran la charla inaugural en el Simposio sobre Edafodiversidad que dentro de unos d\u00edas se celebrar\u00e1 en el contexto de la Conferencia Internacional de Geograf\u00eda de Suelos a celebrar en M\u00e9xico (Noviembre de 2009). Soil surveys took place in six campaigns from 2001 until 2005.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sub.uni-hamburg.de\/opus\/volltexte\/2008\/3728\/pdf\/DissertationPetersen.pdf\">Soil inventory and soil variability on studied areas<\/a><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\" lang=\"EN-GB\">The BIOTA <\/span><\/b><st1:place><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Southern Africa<\/span><\/b><\/st1:place><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\" lang=\"EN-GB\"> Transect and corresponding observatories provide<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"> the research infrastructure for this study. <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">The transect of 2,000 km length stretches from northern Namibia to Cape Town in South Africa <\/span><\/b>with different sidelines and additional study sites. Thus <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">different climatic conditions <\/span><\/b>typical for this part of the subcontinent are reflected. These are namely the<b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\"> tropical summer rainfall regime <\/span><\/b>in the northern half of the transect and the<b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\"> winter rainfall regime in the southern part<\/span><\/b>, both decreasing and overlapping in the central region along the <\/span><st1:place><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Orange River<\/span><\/st1:place><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"> and the southern <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">Namib desert. Mean annual precipitation is between 10 mm in the costal plains of the <\/span><\/b><\/span><st1:place><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Namib Desert<\/span><\/b><\/st1:place><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\" lang=\"EN-GB\"> up to 500 mm in northern <\/span><\/b><st1:country-region><st1:place><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Namibia<\/span><\/b><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\" lang=\"EN-GB\"> and the <\/span><\/b><st1:place><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Cape<\/span><\/b><\/st1:place><b style=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\" lang=\"EN-GB\"> region where even rainfall amounts of 2000 mm are noted in exceptional topographic locations<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"> such as the <\/span><st1:place><st1:placename><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Table<\/span><\/st1:placename><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\"> <\/span><st1:placetype><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">Mountain<\/span><\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial;\" lang=\"EN-GB\">. Except for such <b style=\"\"><span style=\"color: rgb(51, 102, 255);\">azonal sites<\/span><\/b>, mean potential annual evaporation in all regions exceeds the amount of rainfall resulting in climatic regimes from hyper-arid to semi-arid.
