Just as biologists and ecologists talkabout biodiversity, geologists on geodiversity, soil scientists talk about pedodiversity. Recently introduced, the concept of pedodiversity haspromoted a wide range of studies exploring methods of measurement and possible functional applications at different scales. Since theThematic Strategy for Soil Protection, a proposal for a framework Directive, consisting of a Communication from the Commission to the otherEuropean Institutions (COM(2006) 231), the spatial and temporal soil diversity should assume an important role in supporting qualitativelyand quantitatively a common base to develop an environmental strategy for soil protection and sustainable development among Europeancountries.The purpose of this symposium is to offer opportunity for sharing knowledge on pedodiversity concepts, methods for measurement andfunctional applications at different scales in space and in time.
