We feel there is a considerable opportunity in both the market and EGU’s publication portfolio for an Open Access Soil journal (of which there are none). There has been a groundswell of feedback supporting this move and there is a growing need (from funders and authors) for an open access and open Public Peer-Review Soil System Science publication. The Soil Systems Sciences Division voted unanimously to support the proposal of a new EGU soil science journal at the 2013 business meeting in Vienna.

Background and rationale

The Soil System Sciences (SSS) division of the EGU has been a strong and growing international research presence in the last few years. Since 2004 (200 abstracts; 7 sessions) the contribution of the Soil System Science Division has grown considerably with 1427 abstracts and 57 sessions at the 2013 EGU GA. After 10 years of active participation, the SSS Division proposes to develop a journal that will serve the whole EGU membership in collaboration with the other divisions of the EGU, but specially with NH, GM, HS, and BG divisions; and will contribute with HESS, NHSS, Esurf and Solid Earth to the development of a conglomerate of journals that research the interface between the rocks, biota, water and landforms. Originating from EGU sessions each year several special issues and journal articles are being published by other journals such as Catena, Geoderma, Land Degradation and Development, European Journal of Soil Science….. In the field of Soil Science there are currently a total of 33 SCI journals (JCR, 2011). The majority of these journals are topic specific and serve niche needs (e.g. Applied Soil Ecology, Soil Biology and Biochemistry or Clays and Clay Minerals) while only a limited number of journals cover all aspects of the discipline (e.g. Geoderma, Soil Science Society of America Journal, and European Journal of Soil Science), however, none of these journals focus on the interaction of soil with the Earth system. We argue that a new general journal of Soil Science will be welcomed within the Soil Science community for the following reasons: First, there is increasing recognition that global challenges, ranging from climate change to food security and from sustainable land and water resources to improved ecosystem functioning cannot be addressed effectively without the fundamental links that soil processes provide. A multi-disciplinary journal that focuses on the understanding of the soil system and its interactions with the entire Earth System is thus needed. Secondly, most of the general soil science journals have a backlog with articles in press over several months or even years from submission to publication. A general journal of Soil Science that enables rapid publication and that makes scientific publications freely accessible will further enhance linkages between soil science and related disciplines. This was reaffirmed by a vote during the 2013.
