Voy siguiendo \u00faltimamente las alertas de la red social<\/strong><\/span> Soil Science Professionals<\/a>, en la cual se debate abiertamente la crisis que padece nuestra disciplina. Probablemente esta floreciente actividad obedezca a que los colegas vean en la reci\u00e9n aprobada Alianza Global por el Suelo<\/a>, junto al D\u00eda Mundial del Suelo, A\u00f1o Mundial del Suelo, etc., la oportunidad para un renacimiento de la edafolog\u00eda. Sin embargo, como hay que darle un empujoncito, con vistas a que ciudadanos y pol\u00edticos comprendan lo que es un suelo y su importancia para la biosfera y la humanidad, pues (\u2026) manos a la obra. Eso s\u00ed, a menudo seguimos desnortados y discutiendo sobre el sexo de los \u00e1ngeles. Veamos pues algunos de los debates que, a la hora de escribir este post se encontraban abiertos en sus respectivos foros de discusi\u00f3n: (i)<\/strong><\/span> I wish someone offered a MOOC (Massive Online Open Class) on soils. An \u00abIntroduction to Soils\u00bb class would be a great way to promote the study of soils<\/a>; (ii)<\/strong><\/span> \u00abS.O.S\u00bb …VOTE NOW TO \u00abSAVE OUR SOIL\u00bb …Soil Futures Initiative<\/a>; (iii)<\/strong><\/span> The trouble with Soils is we all just treat them like dirt<\/a>, etc.,. Dentro de este contexto, me ha llamado la atenci\u00f3n que la\u00a0Sociedad Brit\u00e1nica de las Ciencias del Suelo<\/strong> <\/span>(British Society of Soil Science)\u00a0lograra que la Radio de la BBC emita un programa exclusivamente dedicado a divulgar el mundo de los suelos<\/strong><\/span>. Pod\u00e9is seguir este \u00faltimo pinchando en el siguiente enlace BBC Radio 4 Shared Planet Soil Science Program<\/a>. A falta de Televisi\u00f3n (que resulta ser otra posibilidad a\u00fan m\u00e1s deseable) se me antoja una idea magn\u00edfica, digna de ser emulada de por otras sociedades nacionales: Difusi\u00f3n radiof\u00f3nica<\/strong><\/span>. Abajo os dejo algunos p\u00e1rrafos sobre sus contenidos y protagonistas (extra\u00eddos de su divulgaci\u00f3n en Soil Science Professionals<\/a>) para todos aquellos que dominen la lectura del suajili. Del mismo modo, acceder\u00e9is a las propias emisiones radiof\u00f3nicas. Pues bien, \u00bfSe atreve a intentarlo alguna otra sociedad hispanoparlante?. Reitero<\/span> que debemos perseverar proactivamente en lugar de estar lloriqueando por las esquinas<\/span><\/strong>, como es pr\u00e1ctica habitual desde hace d\u00e9cadas. British Society of Soil Science Members have worked with BBC Radio 4s Shared Planet to create a program exclusively on Soil Science!<\/strong><\/span> The Program will first air 15th October 2013 at 11.00 GMT then again on the 21st at 21.00 GMT. Professor Wilfred Otten<\/p>\n

Wilfred Otten Professor Wilfred Otten is Professor of Biophysics of Soil Ecosystems at Abertay University in Dundee and co-director of the SIMBIOS Centre, an interdisciplinary research centre that operates at the interface between the physical and life sciences. His research focuses on understanding the organisation and integrated behaviour of soil systems. He has set himself the task to link ecosystem services with processes in soil that operate at the scale of micro-organisms.<\/p>\n

Professor Otten uses X-ray CT to literally look inside soils without having to take them apart. His work has revealed the intricate and complicated network of soil pores within which microorganisms reside, access food sources and interact with each other. Working together with colleagues in the Centre, predictive models are being developed to reveal how soil structure and life in soil are interlinked and how this regulates larger scale processes upon which sustainable growth of human populations depends.<\/p>\n

Dr Helaina Black<\/p>\n

Helaina Black Helaina Black is a soil ecologist based at The James Hutton Institute in Aberdeen and Past President of the British Society of Soil Science. For over 25 years, she has been exploring how we can improve the use and protection of our soils to meet changing human demands and to cope with environmental change in a world. The recently funded ALTER project in Ethiopia and Uganda is one example. Working with soils has led to fieldwork in many challenging environments from the African Rift Valley to the Scottish mountain tops, and to using forensic science type techniques such as DNA and isotopes to unravel the hidden secrets of soils.<\/p>\n

Helaina was recently appointed to the UN FAO affiliated Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soil which was formed in 2013 to provide expert scientific and technical advice and guidance on global soil issues to the Global Soil Partnership and UN affiliate organisations and governments. A key activity of the ITPS in the next 18 months will be to ensure that negotiations for Post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals take full consideration of the fundamental human need for healthy and productive soils to tackle poverty and hunger effectively.<\/p>\n

.Professor Karl Ritz<\/p>\n

Karl Ritz Karl Ritz<\/strong> is a soil ecologist who graduated in Agricultural Botany from the University of Reading in 1981, and completed a PhD in grassland ecology at the University of Bristol in 1984; he then moved to Scotland to lead research programmes in Government Institutes in Aberdeen and Dundee. Since 2002, Karl has held a Personal Chair in Soil Biology at Cranfield University.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0His research interests focus on developing a mechanistic understanding of the origins and functional consequences of the compositional and spatial organisation of soil communities. This work underpins the development of frameworks for understanding factors that regulate the activity of life below ground, systems to manage the biota appropriately, and incisive procedures for assessing and monitoring soil health. Karl is Chief Editor of the high-ranking journal, Soil Biology Biochemistry and has held long-standing editorial roles with FEMS Microbiology Ecology, Mycological Research and the Journal of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, as well as books, including \u2018Criminal and Environmental Soil Forensics\u2019 and most recently \u2018Architecture and Biology of Soils\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
