Fuente Natural Forest Service<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recientemente he recibido numerosos mails de <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usda.gov\/wps\/portal\/usda\/usdahome?navid=OFFICES_OC&amp;navtype=RT&amp;parentnav=AGENCIES_OFFICES_C\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">USDA Office of Communications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, como alguno de los que os expongo\u00a0al final de este post. De este <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">modo se est\u00e1n implementando programas con vistas a paliar un gran impacto ambiental\u00a0de dif\u00edcil soluci\u00f3n bajo los c\u00e1nones actuales de la agricultura industrial<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. El problema causado por <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>las aguas residuales y en especial a trav\u00e9s de una escorrent\u00eda repleta de nutrientes procedentes de la sobrefertilizaci\u00f3n de los suelos agr\u00edcolas, pesticidas y aguas residuales mal tratadas, comienza a ser insostenible en t\u00e9rminos ambientales, pero tambi\u00e9n de salud p\u00fablica<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (por ejemplo las <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madrimasd.org\/blogs\/universo\/2009\/01\/19\/111437\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">floraciones algales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, aguas cuya carga de contaminantes supera los l\u00edmites tolerables por la legislaci\u00f3n en lo concerniente al <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">agua potable<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">). Si pon\u00e9is en vuestro motor de b\u00fasqueda (en este caso el controvertido Google) los palabros \u201cGreat lakes contamination agrochemicals\u201d os saldr\u00e1 un listado con m\u00e1s de <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">m\u00e1s de cuatro millones y medio de \u00edtems.<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong> Ahora se acusa\u00a0a la extensi\u00f3n de la<\/strong> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madrimasd.org\/blogs\/universo\/2013\/04\/15\/142710\">Labranza cero<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>de aumentar la gravedad del problema aludido<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. Recordemos que la denominada <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madrimasd.org\/blogs\/universo\/2010\/03\/27\/135850\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">agricultura sin labranza se basa en agroqu\u00edmicos y transg\u00e9nicos, sindo muy distinta de la denominada ecol\u00f3gica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sitemaker.umich.edu\/section5group1\/introduction_and_background\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Pod\u00e9is leer por ejemplo esta p\u00e1gina Web<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> en la que se expone ampliamente el problema para el distrito de los grandes lagos. De aqu\u00ed <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>que la alarma ha saltado en USDA<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> data la abundancia recibida de mails en menos de dos semanas. En este post no me reiterar\u00e9 sobre lo que ya he abundado en demasiadas ocasiones. Tan solo mentar \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">once again<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201d que <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>nuestros sistemas de producci\u00f3n agraria industrial no funcionan, son insustentables<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> a todas luces, y a las pruebas me remito, como cuando os hablaba de <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madrimasd.org\/blogs\/universo\/2008\/03\/13\/86552\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">la que ya sufre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> el <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.madrimasd.org\/blogs\/universo\/2008\/02\/26\/85393\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Golfo de M\u00e9xico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, inducida por la poluci\u00f3n descontrolada de la <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/miss\/riverfacts.htm\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">cuenca del Mississippi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. La tecnolog\u00eda agraria actual no pueda frenar tan pavorosa degradaci\u00f3n ambiental y atentar contra la salud de los ciudadanos, por lo que hay que insistir en que, <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>o se cambia el modelo actual o la gran cloaca americana seguir\u00e1 creciendo, como en otros muchos numerosos pa\u00edses<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. Some experts are blaming no-till practices, saying they leave phosphorus more stratified near the soil surface and prone to runoff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There\u2019s no denying that phosphorus runoff does contribute to these algae blooms. And yes, some of that comes from agriculture. But an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2014\/08\/lake-erie-algae\/\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> from the science and technology magazine <em>Wired<\/em> says that with best-management practices, farms only lose an average of about 2% of applied fertilizer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And what about golf courses, sewage treatment plants and other sources that discharge into waterways? At Lake Champlain, located along the border of New York and Vermont, it was discovered that about half of the lake\u2019s phosphorus problem comes from developed land. Experts with Lake Champlain\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawntolake.org\/phos.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Lawn To Lake<\/a> organization say one acre of urban\/suburban land, \u201ccontributes about four times more phosphorus to the lake than one acre of farm land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s not to imply farmers shouldn\u2019t do everything possible to reduce fertilizer runoff, whether it\u2019s seeding cover crops to hold nutrients in place, only applying the amount of fertilizer needed to meet plant needs, or placing fertilizers in-furrow instead of broadcasting them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Wired <\/em>says the problem is volume \u2014 there is so much land in the Lake Erie watershed that is applied with fertilizer that even the small amounts that run off are still enough to cause problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But casting all blame on farmers is a mistake. Doing so not only hurts farmers, but the effort to protect our bodies of water as well.
