How can animal testing be reduced during the process of development and validation of new medicines? This will be possible through devices called organs on a chip. These are microfluidic devices created with microfabrication methods and comprising one or more cell cultures in perfused microchannels in a controlled manner. Thus, these devices reproduce in the laboratory part of the physiology of one or several organs of interest and allow for a better prediction of how a medicine will act when administered. Particularly and within the activities in the EVONANO project, we will show the fabrication and operation of microfluidic devices that simulate the blood capillary network in tumors for the validation of nanomedicines in the treatment of cancer.
