The aim of this workshop is to show to the public a very important molecular technique as the first step to discover the microbial diversity that lives in water: "DNA extraction". The workshop will begin with a short introduction to the cell (some cells will be observed under the microscope) and the importance of genetic material. It will be explained how we routinely carry out extraction in the Microbial Ecology Unit and its applications in research. Participants will extract DNA, following a very simple protocol with reagents that can be found at home.
