About me

María João Durão is a leading professor and researcher in the field of architecture and design, with extensive experience at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon. Born in Lisbon, she has a degree in Fine Arts from the Facultad de Bellas Artes de Lisboa (FBAL-UL) and obtained her PhD from the University of Salford, Manchester, with a thesis on Color and Space.

Since 2001, she has been a professor at the Department of Architecture at the University of Lisbon. In 2002, he founded and directed the pioneering Master in Color in Architecture. In addition, since 2004, she has supervised national and international projects as head of the Color Laboratory (LabCor). Since 2016, he has directed the CIAUD Color and Light Research Group of the Faculty of Architecture.

Durão has had an outstanding participation in design training in Portugal. In 1994, the Portuguese Ministry of Education presented its curricular proposal for the creation of undergraduate degrees in Design and Art, of which she was the author, coordinator and teacher. She has taught in Master's programs in Design and Lighting Design at the Faculty of Architecture, and in the Master's for Assessing the Built Environment for Sustainability at the University of Salford.

In the field of research, María João Durão has focused her work on the culture of drawing and color. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Color Association (AIC), where he coordinates 'International Color Day' and chairs the 'Arts and Design Study Group'. She is also a senior member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and co-founder of the group 'Team 11', formed in Houston, Texas. His research on color and light spans domains such as art, design, earth architecture, and aerospace architecture.

As a painter, her work has been exhibited since 1989 and is part of national and international private collections in England, Japan and South Korea. Durão was the founding president of the Portuguese Color Association and is currently its Honorary President.
