The Doppelgänger—an ominous double with a death drive—is a recurring figure in popular culture and art history. The thesis presents the Doppelgänger as an artistic typology with its own identity today. Through the study of various artists and works, several key elements are identified: the search for the uncanny, a pictorialist tendency, fragmented storytelling, staged composition, multiplication of the subject, and complex underlying psychological factors.
