Subtitle. The Expedition of Ruy González de Clavijo to the Court of Sultan Tamerlane (1403-1406). A Journey Through the Mediterranean and the Near East in the Late Middle Ages

Led by CSIC researchers, participants will have the opportunity to learn about one of the most illustrious Madrilenians of the late Middle Ages: Ruy González de Clavijo, the first ambassador of the Kingdom of Castile to the courts of the Byzantine Emperor in Constantinople and Sultan Tamerlane in Samarkand between 1403 and 1406. The account of this journey, entitled "Embassy to Tamerlane," was first published in 1582.

The activity will begin in the Plaza de la Paja, one of the most emblematic places in medieval Madrid, and where Clavijo's house still stands. From there, you'll move on to the San Isidro Museum, where you can learn about his expedition to the East through a large map depicting his journey: Alcalá de Henares, Seville, Rome, Constantinople, Trebizond, Nishapur, Bukhara, and Samarkand. In addition to discovering what each of the cities was like at the time Clavijo visited them, the exhibition will include excerpts from his chronicles and drawings of buildings and figures he himself knew.

The activity is also aimed at children, who will be able to interact with the different elements of the exhibition, relating examples of buildings and figures to the places depicted.

The objective of the itinerary is to show the great diversity of the Mediterranean world and the Near East in the Middle Ages, as well as the existence of close relationships and ties between its different societies.
