The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to a key molecular technique as a first step towards understanding the microbial diversity found in water: ‘DNA extraction’. The workshop will begin with a brief introduction to the cell and the importance of genetic material. We will explain how we routinely carry out DNA extraction in the Microbial Ecology Unit and its applications in research. Participants will extract DNA, following a very simple protocol using reagents that can be found at home. We will conclude by solving the mystery with a sweet treat.
