Si en los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing la actuación española ha sido destacada, logrando 18 metales, el Gran Telescopio Canarias, que está siendo completado en el Observatorio de El Roque de los Muchachos, debería recibir 36 medallas de oro, una por cada una de las piezas que conforman su gran espejo segmentado, que ha sido completado recientemente.

La apertura equivalente de este espejo segmentado, el mayor en su categoría, es de 10.4 metros de diámetro. El telescopio se encuentra todavía en la fase de comisión, realizando las pruebas técnicas para su correcta puesta a punto. Sin embargo, ya se han empezado a tomar algunas imágenes y recientemente se han solicitado propuesta de observación a la comunidad española, para las campañas que presumiblemente tendrán lugar durante el primer semestre del 2009. Como decíamos hace tiempo, son grandes las esperanzas depositadas en este novísimo telescopio que hasta el momento están siendo satisfechas.
