ASTRONOMÍA
La ciencia natural del universo, en su concepto más general. La astronomía se dedica a estudiar las posiciones, distancias, movimientos, estructura y evolución de los astros y para ello se basa casi exclusivamente en la información contenida en la radiación electromagnética o de partículas que alcanza al observador. La astronomía abarca dos ramas principales: la astronomía clásica (que comprende la mecánica celeste y la astronomía de posición) y la astrofísica (que comprende todo lo demás). Casi toda la investigación astronómica moderna queda incluida dentro de esta última rama y por este motivo, en la actualidad, los términos astronomía y astrofísica funcionan como sinónimos.
Primer centro para el estudio de la Astronomía en España, en su momento dedicado a la navegación astronómica. El Real Instituto y Observatorio de la Armada (San Fernando, Cádiz) fue fundado en 1753. Créditos: Real Instituto y Observatorio de la Armada.
