ENANA MARRÓN

Una estrella se caracteriza por su masa, que determina de manera esencial las propiedades observacionales y el tiempo que brillará a partir de la producción de energía debido a reacciones nucleares en su interior. Sin embargo, en el espacio se pueden encontrar objetos de apariencia estelar pero que no tienen masa suficiente como para quemar el elemento más sencillo, el hidrógeno, que consta de un solo protón. Esto es debido a que la presión y temperatura internas, consecuencia del peso de todas las capas de material que se encuentran atraídas por la gravedad del objeto, no son lo suficientemente altas para iniciar la conversión de hidrógeno en helio. A estos cuerpos se los denomina objetos subestelares. La definición incluye tanto las enanas marrones, que en ciertos periodos evolutivos muy cortos pueden quemar un isótopo del hidrógeno denominado deuterio (un protón más un neutrón), como los objetos de masa planetaria, que carecen incluso de esta reacción nuclear. Los modelos teóricos predicen que el límite subestelar se encuentra en una masa equivalente a 0,072 veces la del Sol, aunque en realidad depende ligeramente del contenido de elementos más pesados que el hidrógeno y el helio, los cuáles representan una fracción mínima.

Las enanas marrones, por tanto, son objetos de masa intermedia entre las estrellas más ligeras y los planetas gaseosos más masivos (aproximadamente, entre 0,072 y 0,013 veces la masa del Sol). El espectro de las enanas marrones más frías descubiertas por ahora se parece más al de Júpiter que al de las estrellas frías. La primera enana marrón, Teide 1, fue descubierta en las Pléyades por un grupo español liderado por el astrofísico R. Rebolo en 1995.

Sigma Orionis
