La materia de la que estamos hechos fue creada, literalmente, bien durante el nacimiento del propio universo o en el interior de las estrellas. Se puede afirmar, por tanto, que somos sus descendientes. Los extraordinarios descubrimientos realizados en las últimas dos décadas nos han mostrado un cosmos mucho más complejo de lo que pensábamos. La Tierra, en donde han nacido y muerto todas las generaciones de seres humanos, solo es un pequeño “punto azul”, según la expresión del conocido científico Carl Sagan. La multiplicidad de planetas descubiertos y su extraordinaria diversidad nos permiten plantearnos la posibilidad de una expansión más allá de los confines de nuestro hogar ancestral, lo que conduce a varias pregunta: ¿Es factible y conveniente? ¿Qué implicaciones culturales tendría? ¿Cómo afectaría a nuestra especie?
El Sistema Solar, el antropocentrismo derrotado
Desde el descubrimiento del primer exoplaneta por Michael Mayor y Didier Queloz en 1995, denominado 51 Pegasi b, nuestro conocimiento astrobiológico se ha multiplicada casi de manera exponencial, en buen medida por los desarrollos tecnológicos y por la extraordinaria inversión en recursos humanos. Este binomio, condición esencial para el progreso humano, nos ha proporcionado una visión inesperada de la extraordinaria diversidad de planetas localizados más allá de las fronteras del Sistema Solar.
En la Vía Láctea, nuestra galaxia, existen unos 200,000 millones de estrellas. Ahora se piensa que una fracción muy relevante alberga planetas, pero que por sus propiedades difieren en gran medida de lo que observamos en nuestro sistema planetario, en donde encontramos solo tres familias: gigantes gaseosos y fríos tipo Júpiter, dominados por hidrógeno y helio; similares a Neptuno, también fríos pero menos masivos y en donde se pueden encontrar distintos tipos de hielos; y rocosos, con densidades significativamente superiores al agua. Los dos primeros tipos se encuentran alejados del Sol, mientras que los similares a la Tierra están situados relativamente cerca, aunque no en exceso.Así, la cantidad de energía que llega hasta Venus, nuestro planeta y Marte es la adecuada para posibilitar la presencia de agua líquida en la superficie, si otras condiciones fueran adecuadas. Sin embargo, un “efecto invernadero” ha provocado que la atmósfera de Venus tenga unas condiciones verdaderamente infernales, mientras que Marte, aunque contiene algo de agua en su superficie, carece de otras características que favorecen la sostenibilidad de actividad biológica, como puede ser la tectónica de placas (el reprocesado del material del planeta en su interior) o un campo magnético global (un escudo frente a las partículas de alta energía procedentes sobre todo del Sol). Por si fuera poco, su atmósfera es muy enrarecida y la baja presión permite el desarrollo de tormentas de polvo a escala planetaria.Júpiter y Saturno poseen cohortes de satélites con características muy variadas. Dos de ellos, Europa y Encelado, tienen envolturas de hielo y posiblemente inmensos océanos bajo esa superficie. La misión europea Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer (JUICE) y la americana Europa Clipper tienen previsto continuar la exploración de tres de los compañeros más masivos de Júpiter, centrándose en Europa, aunque no llegarán allí hasta después del 2030. Respecto al Saturno y su satélite Encelado, existen varias propuestas de misiones espaciales, pero ninguna ha pasado más allá de los diseños conceptuales. Tras la destrucción controlada de la sonda Cassini a mediados de septiembre al sumergirse a gran velocidad en la atmósfera de Saturno, solo la nave Juno, cuyo fin está previsto en el 2019 como máximo, nos permite indagar sobre las propiedades de estos mini-sistemas planetarios, en concreto el de Júpiter.
En cualquier caso, la reciente eclosión en el conocimiento de los exoplanetas, incluyendo la detección de algunas atmósferas, ha probado que las concepciones antropocentristas, que usan al Sistema Solar como símil, se han quedado cortas y que la naturaleza nos ofrece una panoplia mucho más amplia. Conocemos planetas que orbitan alrededor de tres estrellas, que tiene atmósferas de compuestos metálicos e incluso que se han formado a partir del material proporcionado por la destrucción de una estrella y que giran alrededor de una estrella de neutrones, el resto hiper-denso que permanece tras una gigantesca explosión, por poner unos ejemplos de sistemas verdaderamente exóticos.
Más relevante aún, se han detectado y estudiado decenas de planetas rocosos. Algunos muestran indicios de poseer atmosferas, otros estarían cubiertos completamente por inmensos océanos y algunos estarían en la denominada zona de habitabilidad, lo que en principio posibilitaría el desarrollo de actividad biológica. De hecho, algunos de los planetas más interesantes se encuentran orbitando alrededor de estrellas frías y cercanas, tales como Trappist-1 o la Próxima Centauri, nuestro primer vecino estelar. GJ1132 b es otro de estos sugestivos astros: su estrella se encuentra a 40 años-luz de nosotros, es mucho más pequeña y fría que el Sol, y el planeta orbita a su alrededor en solo 1,6 días frente a los más de 365 días del año terrestre. A pesar de ello, se ha detectado su cobertura gaseosa. A la misma distancia se localiza LHS 1140 b, un planeta compuesto esencialmente por compuestos férricos y situado en la zona de habitabilidad de su estrella. Por tanto es otra perfecta diana para los estudios con los futuros telescopios que se pondrán en funcionamiento durante la próxima década.
Todas estas posibilidad nos permiten interrogarnos sobre la posibilidad de encontrar mellizos de la Tierra y, lo que es más fascinante, vida más allá. También nos fuerzan a preguntarnos sobre nuestro papel en esta epopeya del conocimiento.
Motivaciones y consecuencias de la búsqueda de nuestro posible próximo hogar
La historia de la humanidad puede interpretarse desde la perspectiva de una continua migración. Desde el nacimiento de la especie homo sapiens en África hace más de 100,000 años se han producido diferentes episodios de colonización de nuevos medios, en algunos casos impulsados por un agotamiento de los recursos. En la actualidad somos conscientes de la fragilidad de nuestro entorno, tanto por las consecuencias de nuestra actividad como por la hostilidad del universo. Los registros geológicos nos muestran que ha habido extinciones masivas debidas a eventos astronómicos y por otra parte, la posibilidad que causemos nuestra propia destrucción por un conflicto nuclear, voluntario o accidental, no es insignificante. Así, las primeras voces que piden la expansión fuera de nuestro planeta para asegurar la supervivencia de nuestra especia ya se han manifestado de manera inequívoca.
El conocido físico y divulgador Stephen Hawking ha declarado recientemente: “La expansión en el el espacio cambiará completamente el futuro de la humanidad… Nos estamos quedando sin espacio y los únicos sitios a los que se puede ir son otros mundos… La expansión es la única cosa que nos puede salvar de nosotros mismos. Estoy convencido de que los humanos necesitamos abandonar la Tierra… No tenemos otra opción”. Aunque la expansión dentro del Sistema Solar o incluso interestelar no sería una solución para los miles de millones de seres humanos que habitan nuestro planeta, sí que representa un gran desafío desde el punto de vista tecnológico, científico, social y filosófico.
Los primeros pasos ya se están dando. La explotación comercial del nuestro entorno ya es una realidad con las compañías que sitúan satélites artificiales con sus propios sistemas de lanzamiento, en algunos casos reutilizándolos y permitiendo así un acceso más barato al espacio. La extracción de minerales, tras la aprobación en 2015 por parte del entonces presidente Barak Obama de una ley que lo permite (Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act), está mucho más cerca, a pesar de los tratados internacionales que prohíbe este tipo de actividades.
El proyecto más ambicioso hasta ahora, por sus implicaciones y su proyección, se denomina Breakthrough Initiatives, y está liderado por los empresarios Yuri Milner (Digital Sky Technologies) y Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), junto a Stephen Hawking y otros investigadores de gran prestigio. Su programa Starshot (“disparo estelar” en inglés) pretende desarrollar micro-naves interestelares del tamaño de tarjetas de crédito y de pocos gramos de peso, que se lanzarían en gran número y que serían aceleradas por rayos láser emitidos desde la Tierra. Evitarían así la necesidad de incorporar motores y combustible, y podrían viajar a las estrellas más cercanas a gran velocidad, aproximándose al 20% de la máxima posible, la de la luz. En su breve paso por estos sistemas planetarios nos proporcionarían información in situ de las condiciones de los mismos, especialmente su habitabilidad.
Tras esa primera etapa de detección de los primeros sistemas idóneos se debería producir la verdadera exploración humana y la colonización. Los obstáculos, sin embargo, se nos aparecen como titánicos. La ingente cantidad de recursos materiales, financieros y humanos se presentan como inasumibles, aunque dispusiéramos de la tecnología adecuada, algo de lo que nos encontramos muy lejos, si es que en algún momento se consigue. La duración del propio viaje es una barrera difícilmente franqueable, ya que se trataría de éxodo que duraría decenas o centenares de años. Por tanto, en principio, solo los descendientes de aquellos que lo iniciasen llegarían al destino final, para enfrentarse a la construcción de una sociedad en un ambiente muy distinto al de su origen.
Las tecnologías emergentes en buena medida posibilitarán, sin embargo, esa posible colonización. El conocimiento de nuestra propia naturaleza a nivel genético y el poder de alterarla para adaptarse a nuevos entornos o la posibilidad de incorporar elementos mecánicos a nuestra parte biológica, convirtiéndonos en ciborgs, nos abren múltiples oportunidades, pero también peligros. Por una parte, se podrían ampliar los ámbitos en los que se podrían desarrollar sociedades humanas, y se incluirían ambientes que ahora vemos como hostiles. Por otra, no se deben olvidar los efectos psicológicos y nuestra herencia biológica: los seres humanos aparecieron en las sabanas africanas, y nuestro cerebro y personalidad tienen unas limitaciones con las que sería peligroso jugar.
Sin embargo, es posible imaginar otras opciones. Eventualmente será técnicamente viable enviar nano robots auto replicantes que crearan toda la infraestructura necesaria en el planeta a colonizar, comenzando por un laser que desacelerara la segunda oleada de micro naves. Una vez que se crearan todas los servicios necesarios, incluyendo terraformación, sería posible producir, partir de la información de nuestro código genético y con compuestos inorgánicos, una nueva generación de seres humanos. Sería, por tanto, un verdadero nuevo comienzo, una verdadera génesis prácticamente ex nihilo.
Las posibilidades se amplían con cada descubrimiento científico pero, como no podría ser de otra manera, también el número de interrogantes. ¿Cuáles serían los cambios sociales y políticos necesarios para hacer viable esa expansión? ¿Qué elementos sociales, incluyendo familiares o de gobierno, se verían afectados de una manera irreversible? ¿Requería necesariamente la aceptación de implantes mecánicos que “aumentasen” nuestras capacidades fisiológicas o mentales? Al igual que en las islas Galápagos, ¿llegaremos a la manipulación genética para adaptarnos de manera controlada al viaje y al nuevo planeta, escindiéndonos en distintas especies separadas en un archipiélago estelar? ¿Merece la pena el esfuerzo y dejar de invertir estos recursos, por ejemplo, en la sostenibilidad de nuestras sociedades en la Tierra? Finalmente, ¿cuáles serán lo efectos en la gran mayoría, los que se quedarán atrás en nuestra frágil Tierra? Solo desde la responsabilidad y desde un análisis holístico que incluya todas las áreas del saber se podrá dar una respuesta adecuada a lo que tal vez sea la aventura más importante de nuestra especie.
