The removal of gluten from the diet is currently the treatment for celiac disease and other gluten-related disorders. However, starting a gluten-free diet without a prior diagnosis can lead to negative consequences if not medically justified, including nutritional, social, and financial impacts. It can also complicate the diagnostic process, as symptoms and abnormal test results often resolve once gluten is eliminated, making it necessary to reintroduce gluten to confirm the diagnosis. This reintroduction is often poorly tolerated by patients and, at present, lacks standardized protocols to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
This session will explore the key differences among gluten-related conditions and emphasize the importance of establishing a clear diagnosis before making dietary changes. It will also present emerging research approaches that may offer reliable diagnostic alternatives without requiring prolonged gluten reintroduction, helping to overcome the limitations faced in routine clinical practice.
